Madelyn did not return to the Jent residence. Instead, she went to the unit she rented. As she took out the key to open the door, a grassy and earthy fragrance wafted through the air. Madelyn walked in and saw that the plants on the balcony were in bloom. The house was clean, with only a uniform that was obviously not hers lying on the blue sofa.
It reminded Madelyn of Forrest. She walked over and held the uniform. She wondered how he was doing and started to reminisce about the past. This house was filled with memories of her and Forrest, memories of him cooking in the kitchen and doing homework on the dining table. When he was exhausted, he would lie on the sofa and sleep until the first afternoon class started.
In the blink of an eye, a week had passed. During this period, her phone was off. She never left the room, so she was clueless about whatever happened outside. She shut herself in that tiny house, sitting cross-legged on the floor. She numbed herself by drawing. Sometimes, she would even draw for a whole day and night. When she was tired, she slept. When she was hungry, she would eat whatever she could find. She did not touch any of her study material.
As her hand touched the glass cups, she noticed the water inside was finished. Madelyn got up with the help of the sofa. She scratched her head, which had not been washed for a few days. She was a mess and had never been this disheveled before.
She poured another glass of water and remembered she needed to eat her medication. She had finished most of her antidepressants and wondered how long it would take to get better...
'Does this count as me giving up on myself?' Madelyn wondered.
Bang, bang, bang! The sound of knocking came.
Before Madelyn could consume her tablet, she left to open the door. When she saw the person who had arrived, the white tablet in her hand fell to the floor. She noticed that she had lost her composure and quickly regained her senses. She picked up the tablet from the floor and wiped it on her paint-riddled clothes before swallowing it with water.
Zach walked into the house and closed the door. The dimly lit room immediately darkened as the blinds were closed, and the lights were not on. The house was messy and the basin was filled with uncleaned plates. He never expected the usually clean and tidy Madelyn to be so sloppy. He had never seen her like this before.
