After finishing breakfast, Felix hesitated but decided to call Xena. His mind kept drifting back to last night and the madness with Averill at least, at the time, he had genuinely thought it was Xena. 

Fortunately, the call connected, and Xena’s cold voice immediately came through, “What is it?” 

Felix felt incredibly awkward, even though nothing had actually happened between them. Xena, about last night-” 

Xena quickly cut him off, “I’m not dwelling on it. No need to explain yourself. Besides, there’s nothing between us, so your private life is your own business.” 

As expected, Felix thought women always seemed to get upset over the same kind of things. He said, “Alright. I’ll drop it. I just hope this doesn’t affect your mindset during the investigation.” 

There was a long pause before Xena responded, saying, “Felix, thank you for getting headquarters to release me. That meant a lot to me. 

“As for the investigation, I’m not worried. My assistance to Uncle Perry was completely legal and ethical, and they can investigate all they want.‘ 

As a high–ranking official herself, Xena understood the immense influence required to secure someone’s release in such situations. Her gratitude to Felix was genuine, and she knew that such favors from powerful figures were invaluable and could only be used once. 

“You don’t need to thank me,” Felix replied. “I know you wouldn’t have done anything wrong.” 

The brief conversation left Felix relieved, knowing there were no lingering misunderstandings between them. 

Around 10:30 am, the doorbell rang. Seeing it was Jack, Felix grabbed him by the collar and pulled him inside. “Jack, you really screwed me over last night!” 

Jack looked bewildered. “What do you mean? Did Ms. Kinsley take advantage of you or something?” 

Felix rolled his eyes, realizing there was no point in complaining. “Never mind that. Why are you here?” 

Jack gave a wry smile. “Felix, I’m literally being forced at knifepoint here. Lunch together?” 

“With Nancy?” Felix asked, catching on. 

Jack nodded. “Nancy wants to thank you for helping her out of that huge mess. She’s

Felix immediately declined. “No way. I appreciate the gesture, though.”
