Xena came home to find a table full of food that night. Puzzled, she turned to Alice Gunner, their housekeeper. “Are we having company tonight?” 

Alice said with a smile, “I’m not sure. Mr. Summers Senior just asked me to prepare all this food.” 

Her grandfather did? Xena figured Curtis must be expecting friends over since nothing else made sense. 

“You’re home, Xena. Wash up and join me for a drink.” As Curtis walked down the stairs, he beamed like a teenager in love. Xena stared at him, dumbfounded. 

“What’s got you–in such high spirits, Grandpa?” 

“Let’s discuss it over dinner.” 

While Xena poured them both some wine, her curiosity burned. “Can you tell me now?” As it turned out, this feast was not for guests. He was just in a great mood. “My greatest burden has finally been lifted. Isn’t that worth celebrating?” 

Xena did not even know he had any burdens. “Will you tell me about it?” 

Curtis nodded. His eyes were filled with nostalgia and memories. 

“Long ago, I hurt someone I loved deeply. I was young and foolish then, so I was blind to the fact that my greatest happiness was right in front of me. Everything was too late by the time I realized it. I know it might seem disrespectful to your late grandmother, but that’s the truth.” 

Despite her status as the Phoenix Warlord, Xena was still a woman at heart. This glimpse into her grandfather’s romantic past had her completely hooked. “Who was she? Grandpa, I never knew you had such a past!” 

Curtis sighed as he took a sip of wine. “We all make mistakes, and that was my biggest one. She has a beautiful name, so I’ll never forget it. Her name is Sarah Spring.” 

What? Xena’s jaw dropped. Unless she was mistaken, this had to be the same Madam Spring she had been trying to track down for months but without any success. 

Of all places to hear that name again, she had heard it from her own grandfather! She was Curtis‘ long–lost love? Ah, if he only knew that the Phantom Poison that nearly killed him was her doing. 

“What’s with that look on your face? Have you heard of Sarah before?” Curtis asked. 

Chuckling, Xena quickly composed herself. It was better to keep those details to herself. ” No, I just think it’s a lovely name.”
