Earlier in the day, Felix had sent Xena a message about a newly released comedy movie, suggesting they watch it together in a few days. To his surprise, Xena replied that they could go that very day. 

“Have you solved that case you were working on?” Felix asked. 

The case involved over a dozen children, and Felix knew how deeply it had affected her. He didn’t think she’d be in the mood for a movie otherwise. 

“It’s been solved. However, I can’t share the details with you.” 

“Solved?” Felix thought to himself, frowning. He had personally dealt with the mastermind behind it, ensuring the case would remain a mystery. How could it possibly have been resolved? Something about this was odd. 

“They’ve caught someone?” Felix pressed. “Come on. You know I’m not the type to spread things around. Tell me.” 

His curiosity got the better of him, and he couldn’t resist probing further, even if it risked annoying her. 

After a moment of hesitation, Xena finally relented. “Alright. I guess I can tell you since the case is officially closed. The mastermind was identified as Yates Jordan, the Supreme Elder of Polaris. He turned himself in at the Wolfie troops’ headquarters.” 

“Yates Jordan?” Felix was stunned. 

Yates hadn’t even been involved, so why would he confess to it? 

“Are you sure you’re not mistaken?” 

“I’m not mistaken. He even disclosed the location of a secret lab, but it had already been burned to the ground. Whatever chemicals were stored there caused the fire to consume everything–bodies and all. There was nothing left but ash, not even enough for testing.” Felix pieced it together. Yates must have been wracked with guilt. Over a hundred children had died, and Polaris had already disbanded. This might have been his way of easing his conscience. After all, as the sect’s most powerful figure, he couldn’t escape responsibility for what had happened under his watch. 

Changing the subject, Felix asked casually, “By the way, I haven’t seen Aimee lately. Did she leave Canraville?” 

“Not sure,” Xena replied, shrugging. “She disappeared without a word. Typical of her. Don’t worry about it. She’s always been wild. She might’ve gone back to her family overseas. I tried calling her once, but I couldn’t get through.”

Felix couldn’t resist teasing her. “So, does this count as our first official date?” 

For once, a rare blush crept across Xena’s face as she nodded lightly. For a moment, she seemed softer, showing a glimpse of femininity 

After the movie, Felix drove Xena home before heading back home himself. Despite the lingering effects of the strange force left in his body by Madam Spring, he knew better than to rush things. 

First, he genuinely cared about Xena. Second, he believed in respecting her boundaries. When he pulled into his driveway, Sherlyn jogged by and stopped beside his car. 

“Wow, what a coincidence, Felix! Did you just get back?” 

Felix smiled. “Yeah.” 

Sherlyn had been living in Canraville all this time but had never once bothered him. Her thoughtfulness tugged at his heart. 

“Wait a second,” she said, sniffing the air theatrically. “You went on a date, didn’t you? There’s a woman’s scent in your car. It’s not perfume, either. I’ve got a sharp nose!” Felix replied helplessly, “Yeah, I went on a date. Sorry.” 

I’d wait for you, didn’t But Sherlyn simply smiled. “What’s there to be sorry for? I told you I’d wait for I? Whatever you do is your business. See you around.”
