As soon as Sawyer finished, Theo spoke up. “Whatever the case, Citrine is still my girlfriend. When she wakes up, I’ll make it up to her. I promise.”

Sawyer’s smile faded, just a little.

He hesitated, then turned to Theo with a serious look. “Theo, you’re really not planning to break up with Citrine?”

Theo blinked, almost startled. “Break up?”

Theo paused, as if some memory surfaced, then said quietly, “I only see Jeanette as a sister. Nothing more.”

He glanced at the hospital bed, at Jeanette’s sleeping form, and said solemnly, “Still, you have my word: I’ll always protect Jeanette. Even Citrine won’t be allowed to hurt her.”

Sawyer found Theo more and more unreadable. He thought of all the times Jeanette had cried in secret over Theo, and in the end, he couldn’t help feeling indignant for his daughter.
