He glanced at the girl wearing a surgical mask and asked, “When will your chairman be arriving?”

Citrine didn’t answer right away. Instead, she walked over, took a seat across from him, and introduced herself. “Mr. Gorman, it’s nice to meet you. I’m Citrine Carmichael.”

She’d caught a cold last night after getting chilled and, not wanting to infect anyone, had no choice but to show up with a mask covering her face.

“You’re Citrine Carmichael?” Gorman sounded genuinely surprised.

“Yes,” she replied with a slight nod, her voice hoarse.

She looked Gorman in the eye. “So, are you here today to discuss business, Mr. Gorman, or is this about Jeanette?”

Gorman’s expression remained icy, his demeanor less than friendly. Citrine guessed, with little doubt, that this was about Jeanette.

Sure enough, he didn’t hesitate. “I heard President Carmichael showed up at my house yesterday and bullied someone.” His tone was sharp, every word edged in accusation.

“So Jeanette ran straight to you to complain, huh?” Citrine wasn’t surprised. If there was one thing Jeanette excelled at, it was twisting the truth to suit herself.

Gorman’s face didn’t change, but his voice grew firmer, more insistent. “President Carmichael, you went after someone under my protection. Don’t you think you owe me an explanation?”

“An explanation? And what kind of explanation did you have in mind?” To this moment, Citrine still couldn’t quite figure out what Gorman was really after.

Gorman paused, weighing his words, then said, “An apology. And compensation—ten million dollars for Jeanette.”

“One slap, ten million dollars? Why don’t you just go rob a bank?” Citrine almost laughed in disbelief, wondering if she’d heard him right.

Dream on. He wanted money? He’d have to rip it straight out of her heart first.
