The battle continued even as the six wolves surrounded us, the scene reminded me of a Raptor circling its prey before it swooped in for the kill. We were both strong, skilled fighters and no doubt stronger together, but it was becoming very obvious that this would not be an easy fight even for us.
I locked eyes with one of the wolves, allowing him to see the defiant smirk on my face and just as I expected the wolf snapped its large teeth at me. I could see its control slipping as I swung my fist forward, landing a jaw breaking blow to its face. Before the wolf could even react to being thrown off its feet, the other five sprang into action.
Three of them tackled Devin while the other two pounced on me, their claws dug into my flesh through my leather attire and teeth attempted to graze my skin as both wolves fought for dominance over my vulnerable state.
Both wolves wanted the pleasure of killing me.
‘Not today mutts.’ Shadow commented and I felt myself shifting. This was her fight too and it was time I let the beast in me out for the world to see.
My form grew; forcing both wolves off me with a powerful shove of my large body. The first wolf went crashing feet away from me while the second tried scrambling away, but it wasn’t fast enough to avoid my canines clamping down on its neck. The wolf thrashed under my hold, its claws brushing my thick fur, but never once touching the flesh beneath. With a sudden jerk of my head the wolf’s neck tore in half, the coppery taste of blood filled my senses.
I was livid, but most of all I felt powerful. This was what I was made for and I wouldn’t rest until my destiny is fulfilled.
My icy blue eyes landed on the three wolves on top of my struggling mate, with a loud roar I pounced on the one closest to me, my claws dug into its flesh which had the wolf’s body jerking in pain and surprise as a howl broke from its throat. My claws extended further into its skin strengthening my grip on it while my teeth clamped around the vertebrae at the top of its neck. With the force of my paws on its back I yanked my head backwards making quick work of snapping its neck.
My senses were heightened; it felt like an electrically charged bubble was surrounding me and crackled in warning every time something came close.
I felt the attack before I saw the coffee coloured wolf lurching towards me, on instinct my body thrust itself forward with canines clashing and paws steely. My powerful build drove us both to the ground with a booming thud so hard that I felt the wolf’s ribs break beneath my weight. A loud whimper escaped its muzzle and its paw swung at my face catching me off guard, allowing its nails to rip my flesh deep enough to draw blood.
One glance at the drip of blood that fell to my muzzle and the beast lost control.
With a fierce growl I once again mauled the animal’s chest with a violent thrash of my upper body. The blow was so significant that the wolf’s sternum crushed, a deafening howl echoed through the battlefield as the wolf shook beneath me, its movements slowing till even its whimpers grew silent and the breath left its lungs.
Silence. Nothing but my own furious breathing sounded around me.
I lifted my head and surveyed the area; the once green grass that spread across the yard was littered with wolf and human bodies alike, the natural green pigment now a sickening bloody brown. The metallic smell of blood filled the air and if not for the adrenalin flowing through our blood, it might have been nauseating.
Between the corpses stood hundreds of pack members, some in human form, others stood proudly in their wild form. Each and every eye trained on me where I stood still panting above the wolf whose life I had taken. The look in their eyes was a mix of pride and fear. Pride for our victory and fear for the beast that stood before them.
*Crunch!*
My head whipped to the right, but my reaction was not fast enough to stop the bullet that whizzed past me and lodged itself in the chest of a man who had been more than a friend to me.
My brother.
The ferocious growl that emitted from deep within me caused the ground to shake beneath my feet. My body shook as I stalked closer to the filthy creature that started it all; the smirk never fell from his face as he pointed the shotgun at my head.
Little did he know, not even the Goddess could stop me from ripping him to shreds.
‘Weapons, now!’ I growled through the mind link. This was not over yet, we were just moving to the next phase.
A shot rang from behind me, breaking the rogue’s concentration for a split second, that second was enough for me to pounce and knock the gun from his hands. I vaguely noticed a large group of rogues emerge from the forest with weapons blazing. Now it looked like a warzone.
Not wanting to waste any more time my jaws clamped over the stranger’s neck.
‘This is for my family.’ I said in his mind as I tightened my jaw enough to pierce his trachea, but not quite kill him.
‘This is for Tatiana.’ I landed a blow to his stomach with my left paw.
