Hendrix was in no hurry to go back to dinner after finishing his call. Instead, he hung back in the yard to have a smoke. As the minty taste of the cigarette slowly filled his mouth, so did his emotions gradually subside. 

Suddenly, his phone rang just when he was about to finish smoking. He immediately declined the call after taking a glance at the caller ID. But the other party called again not even one second later. Hendrix frowned, and after hesitating for two seconds, he finally gave in and accepted the call. 

“Hendrix, did you purposely let Brandon win the bidding for the Extensa Project?” asked Maxwell, his voice tight. 

“Yeah,” answered Hendrix softly. 

Maxwell suddenly laughed. “My! You really are quite generous, aren’t you? It’s not every day I hear about someone handing over such a big project to their business competitor. Are you really that eager to help Brandon climb the ranks?” 

“Are you 

done?” asked Hendrix impatiently. “Because if you are, I’m going to hang up now.” 

“Did you know Brandon and Noelle are getting married?” asked Maxwell out of the blue. 

That offhand remark cut Hendrix’s words short. For a moment, he even wondered if he had misheard. 

Sensing Hendrix’s shock, Maxwell chuckled and added, “Well, it sounds like you didn’t know. Figures. Because if you did, you definitely wouldn’t have been so eager to help Brandon. 

“Do you know what this means? It means you’re actually paving the way for your ex–wife’s current boyfriend. Looking at it that way, you really are generous!” 

Maxwell’s tone grew increasingly mocking. 

Hendrix snapped out of his daze and immediately replied firmly, “Impossible!” 

Maxwell, however, laughed. “Oh, it’s possible, alright. Brandom himself admitted it tonight right in front of all of us. He said he likes Noelle and is dating her with the intention of marrying her! 

“Speaking of which, he really should thank you. After all, it would’ve been difficult for Noelle to marry into the Quinlan family after what happened last night.

now, Brandon is the one who secured the Extensa Project, making him the star of Quinlan Group. He can. marry whoever he wants without needing anyone’s approval. So you see, Hendrix, you’ve actually played the biggest role in bringing them together.” 

Maxwell seemed ready to keep going, but Hendrix had already hung up the call. His lips were pressed into a thin line, while his fingers were clenched tightly around his phone. 

Suddenly, he felt a sting at his fingertips. Only then did he realize that the cigarette he was smoking had burned down completely, and the ember was now touching his skin. He quickly extinguished the cigarette. 

Just then, Beatrice walked over. “What are you still doing here?” 

Hendrix glanced at her but said nothing- 

“Yvonne is visiting for the first time, and you’re already giving her the cold shoulder? Is that really appropriate?”
