As soon as Maxwell spoke, Noelle noticed the smell of alcohol on him. His eyes were slightly red, and he certainly didn’t look sober. 

“If you have something to say, just say it,” Noelle said. 

Maxwell stood by the door, staring at her for a while before finally asking, “Why didn’t you come to my engagement party?“/ 

The two of them hadn’t had any contact with each other since the last incident, so Maxwell’s question actually caught Noelle off guard. 

But she quickly regained her composure. “There was no need for me to attend.” 

“What do you mean, ‘No need for you to attend‘? Aren’t we friends?” 

The word “friends” sounded incredibly awkward when Maxwell said it. 

Noelle looked at him for a moment, then smiled. “No. We haven’t been friends since you and Sandra teamed up to hurt me.” 

“So you chose Brandon as your way of getting back at me?” All the expressions on Maxwell’s face suddenly vanished as he locked his eyes on her. “Is getting married to him another way of getting back at me?” 

“Who said I’m marrying him?” 

“Isn’t it true? Brandon admitted it to the family tonight! And I just saw you two downstairs, behaving intimately with each other.” 

Maxwell couldn’t help but laugh bitterly as he spoke, “Noelle, I know you don’t like me. What I did last time… Well, it was a last–ditch effort. 

“But why Brandon of all people? You know how much I hate him! You can be with or marry whoever you want in this world, but not him! Ever since we were kids, he’s been the admired and celebrated heir of the family, while I’ve always been the one hidden in the shadows. 

“Everything I had–my food, clothes, and daily necessities were merely the things he didn’t want! You knew all this already. If it weren’t for this, how could we have ever become friends? So why, Noelle? Why did you betray me in the end?” 

As Maxwell spoke, he took a step closer to Noelle. 

She tried to close the door, but he quickly pressed his hand against it. The difference in strength between them was clear–Noelle was quickly pushed aside as Maxwell forged his way in. 

“Have you gone mad?” Noelle snapped, regaining her composure as she glared at him. “Get out!” 

Maxwell let out a low chuckle. “Maybe I have gone insane. Did you really think my years abroad were all smooth sailing? I used to believe that no matter how unfair the world was to me, no matter how other people treated me, at least… you were on my side.” 

As Maxwell spoke, his gaze slowly shifted to Noelle. 

It was at that moment that Noelle finally saw it clearly. There was something unmistakable in his eyes–hatred.
