25 BONUS 

When Hendrix was a child, he once came across a stray cat at his school. The kitten seemed to have just been born and had no mother by its side. It lay weakly in the grass, meowing softly. 

Hendrix merely glanced at it, but he didn’t have much sympathy. So, he quickly continued walking. 

What he didn’t expect was for the kitten to follow him. Though his pace wasn’t slow, and the kitten could barely stand, it still stumbled along after him. 

When Hendrix was about to reach the school gates, he finally stopped. Then, he went to a nearby snack shop and bought a sausage to give it to the kitten. 

The kitten ate happily. 

From that day on, every time Hendrix finished school, he would see it. It would approach him on its own, rub against his palm, and then obediently wait to be fed. 

One day, Hendrix began carrying snacks in his school bag. On the weekend, he even made a special trip to the supermarket to buy a bag of cat food. 

He had even made up his mind. After feeding the kitten on Monday, he would first take it to a vet for a checkup. If everything was fine, he would take it home. 

Although it might be hard to explain to Ophelia and Beatrice, Hendrix believed that the day the kitten followed him, it had chosen him, and he should take responsibility for it. 

But when he went to school on Monday, he found that someone else had already fed the kitten canned fish. 

Hendrix, worried that the canned food might not be good for it, reached out to pick it up for a closer look. 

The kitten thought he was trying to snatch its food and immediately bit his wrist. Its newly grown baby teeth didn’t leave a deep wound, but Hendrix’s heart suddenly turned cold. 

An animal was just an animal, after all. 

He hated betrayal and hurt, so he threw the food and cage he had prepared into the bin. From that day onward, he stopped visiting the cat. 

Sometimes, after class, he would still hear its soft cries, but never once did he look back. 

Until one day, he saw it by the side of the street. It had greyish–white spots on its body, so Hendrix was sure it was 

the kitten. 

It seemed to have been run over by a car, its body covered in bloodstains. Its wide–open eyes stared blankly, its breathing was heavy, and its frail chest heaved violently, as if trying desperately to cling to life. 

When it saw Hendrix, its eyes seemed to brighten, as if it recognized him and knew that if Hendrix took it to the vet at that moment, it might survive. 

But Hendrix only looked at it for a moment. After that glance, he acted as if nothing had happened and got into the 

car. 

At that time, Hendrix was almost ten years old. He understood that its guarding of food was merely a survival instinct. 

In the end, it was just a stray cat. What could it possibly understand?
