Dylan had considered all kinds of responses Noelle might give him, but this was the last thing he expected. And she wasn't just brushing him off—her gaze was serious, like she was genuinely asking.
Before Dylan could respond, Noelle continued, "If I remember correctly, we had already broken up by then. And while we were together, I never had any contact with Hendrix. In that regard, I never did you dirty or wrong."
After Noelle finished speaking, Dylan's smile slowly faded. "So are you implying that I did you dirty?" he asked hoarsely.
Noelle was caught off guard by his question. She was about to explain when Dylan said, "I know I hadn't been entirely honest with you during our relationship. But Noelle, do you think I really had a choice back then?"
Noelle frowned and stared at him for a long moment before asking, "So, you were lying to me back then, weren't you?"
"What?"
"Didn't you tell me before that you could handle having nothing, that it didn't matter if everything was taken from you, as long as we could be together? Was that just a lie, too?"
"No," Dylan replied without hesitation.
Noelle fell silent.
Dylan knew he was contradicting himself and was about to explain further when Noelle cut him off, "Then, I understand now."
"Yes, I am that kind of person. But Noelle, I really did think about building a life with you—even if it was an ordinary one. Back then, I actually started to look forward to that kind of life. I know I've let you down, so it's only natural that you hate me now."
"You're wrong," Noelle quickly corrected him. Then, she said, "I don't hate you."
A jolt went through Dylan. He looked at Noelle in disbelief.
"But it's also true I don't want to see you again," Noelle said. "I can't condone nor understand the things you've done. But ultimately those were your choices, so I can't judge them from my perspective. That said, I still maintain my stance of not wanting to see you."
