Knox's POV
"We don't know. Kane and I were getting into it in the hallway. I left her in bed; when I came into her room, she was gone..."
I should want to ask what they were getting into it over, I should care, but I couldn't give a damn. It was most likely about Lottie, and if it wasn't, then boo-hoo. I hope he didn't get his way and Adam gave him the same beating he gave me.
"Knox," Havoc barked in my mind. As much as I knew my wolf supported me, I also knew he missed Rolo and Kane. Again, I should care... Again, I don't.
"There was..." Kane started to say, but I didn't want to hear from him right now. Or ever.
"Knox," Havoc moaned again, and I couldn't suppress the eye roll even if I tried.
"I didn't ask you," I hissed, giving my brother a stern look as he steadied himself. With a sigh, his lips closed, but unfortunately, I knew it wouldn't be forever.
"A scent..." He continued, not listening to me like the prick he was, proving my point. Kane couldn't help but control things—people, situations, the world.
"It was Anthony's," Kane uttered, making me snort. Now, he was seriously scraping the bottom of the barrel to get my attention. Pausing for a moment, I considered that maybe Lottie wasn't missing at all, and this was a ruse of Kane's to get noticed.
"Impossible," I laughed, quickly pulling on a pair of pants and shoving my feet into my crocs. Fashion could wait; what I needed now was quick and easy.
"He is telling the truth. I can tell," Havoc confirmed, making me feel a shred of guilt for doubting Kane would toy with Lottie's safety like that.
"Okay," I acknowledged to Havoc, not wanting to say more than that. Any lingering desire to wack one out was now gone, the feeling replaced by a cold dread that settled in my stomach. The urgency to find Lottie consumed me, pushing all other thoughts aside.
"I know what I smelled," Kane tried to reason with me, but I shrugged him off, not trusting myself to break this icy wall I had up around me.
"Knox, will you listen?" Kane implored, making me grunt and shake my head in anger.
"You are wrong... again," I hissed, glaring at him. The hurt that flickered across his face registered briefly, but I pushed it aside. There was no time for his mistakes or my sympathy.
"He is not. I smelled it, too. It was Anthony's scent..." Adam countered firmly. Sighing, I ran a hand through my hair and nodded, trusting what they thought they had smelled. But inside, confusion and irritation swirled within me. If they were right, it could only mean one thing: someone was lying or manipulating us. And my money was on our father. The thought that he might be involved sent a fresh wave of anger coursing through me.
"Why is it impossible?" Liam asked from behind me, making me smile slightly despite the tension. I had hardly noticed him enter, let alone slip past me and into the room. His hands lifted the covers, searching for any clues.
"People don't just come back from the dead," Liam mused, his brows furrowed as I shook my head slowly.
"You'd be surprised," I muttered under my breath. Memories of our dealings with Astaroth flickered at the edges of my mind—a demon who thrived on chaos and deceit. With him involved, the impossible became possible. But I wasn't about to bring our silent partner into this conversation.
"Exactly," I agreed aloud, deciding to keep Astaroth out of this. "Which means someone is trying to mess with us."
"Or..." Kane started to say, but I cut him off.
"Our father lied," I suggested as I clenched my jaw. "Wouldn't be the first time." I scoffed as Adam looked between us, his features knotted together with anger and exhaustion.
"Why would he lie about something like that?" Liam asked, stepping closer. I could feel Kane stiffen, and through our once-strong twin bond, I could sense how torn he was with the idea of our father lying. He wanted to believe he had changed and was taking accountability for the pain he had caused us.
"Wouldn't be the first time," I scoffed as Adam looked between us, his features knotted together with anger and exhaustion. "Would it, Kane?" I asked, enjoying putting my brother on the spot.
"We don't have time for this; we need to find Charlotte," he replied, levelling me with a hard stare that was almost laughable. Maybe once I would respect Kane's words, but after the shit show he had left us to live in, I was over it—and him.
