Lottie's POV
I watched as Fluffy approached me, her head nudging at my stomach gently. A cute sound bubbled from her throat. A warm sensation spread through me as Fluffy's touch seemed to resonate with the pups stirring inside me. It was as if they recognised the hellhound's presence, responding with gentle flutters. I couldn't explain how, but despite the cuffs suppressing my abilities, this connection brought me a glimmer of relief. For a moment, the fear and uncertainty faded, replaced by a comforting sense of unity.
"We should leave," my captor stuttered from behind me, and I couldn't help but grin at the way Fluffy's head snapped around to glare at him. Its eyes narrowed, a low growl rumbling from deep within its chest. Gradually, it stepped closer as my captor stepped away, sweat slowly snaking down his face.
"Do something," he hissed to me, and I grinned, holding up my cuffed hands. The metal cuffs clanked together, the cold steel pressing into my wrists. The weight of them was both a hindrance and a reminder of my current predicament, but they also served as the perfect prop for my defiance.
"Sorry, my hands are tied—literally," I taunted. A mischievous smirk spread across my face, my eyes dancing with amusement as Fluffy forced my captor into a corner. His panicked glances between me and the hellhound only heightened my satisfaction.
"Your smart mouth got us into this. And it will be the death of me," he growled as he tried to push Fluffy away. His actions only made the beast's mouth widen as it snarled, teeth snapping inches from his face.
"Make her stop," he pleaded, and I smirked, leaning against a cold, damp rock wall. The chill seeping through my clothes contrasted with the warmth of triumph bubbling inside me.
"You know, I am not sure if Fluffy is a girl or a boy," I muttered as if bored. But honestly, I was thrilled seeing the tables turn.
"Charlotte," he hissed as Fluffy's muzzle edged closer.
"Fluffy..." I asked lightly with innocence. A sigh of relief left my captor's lips as Fluffy turned to look at me, all aggression gone, its features replaced with love and adoration.
"Are you a girl hound? Or a boy?" I asked, ignoring the scoff coming from my captor. He let out a frustrated huff, the sound echoing off the tunnel walls. His annoyance at my seemingly trivial question was palpable, but that only made the moment sweeter.
"A girl," I laughed, seeing her raise a leg to show me her lack of wolf-like anatomy.
"Ah, I thought so," I grinned, pushing off the wall. "Can you give me a moment with him?" I asked, stepping closer to my captor but not close enough for him to reach me. A low growl erupted in the tunnels, and I couldn't help the chuckle.
There was a haunting familiarity in his sharp features, the way his lips curled into a knowing smile. He wasn't part of the pack; that much I was certain. He lacked the earthy scent of a wolf, and his aura felt entirely different—ancient, powerful, and unsettling.
Panic flickered within me as I glanced down at the cuffs encircling my wrists, their cold metal biting into my skin. A frown creased my forehead. Were these suppressing more than just my abilities? Were they also clouding my memories, forcing fragments of my past to hide in the recesses of my mind? The thought sent a chill through me.
"Who is he, and why does he feel so... familiar?" I uttered to myself.
"No, sweet girl," he said softly, a note of genuine concern threading through his voice. "That would be me. I want to help you slowly recover those hidden moments. We can't have you overwhelmed all at once, can we? Not in your condition." His eyes softened ever so slightly, giving him an almost compassionate appearance. There was something disarming about the way he spoke as if he truly cared about my well-being. It both intrigued and unsettled me. Why was a stranger—or someone I couldn't fully remember—so invested in protecting me?
"Who are you?" I snapped, my voice tinged with pain and urgency. My heart raced as a torrent of emotions surged within me—fear, frustration, a desperate yearning for answers. There was something about him that both drew me in and pushed me away. I needed to know who he was, why he felt so significant, and why my memory of him was just out of reach.
"Please, I feel like I am going crazy. I need answers." I sighed, shaking my head as I slammed the cuffed hands against the stone wall, hoping to dislodge them somehow. Blood trickled down my wrist and fingers, slowly dropping to the ground in sizzling hisses. Closing my eyes, I winced, knowing it was from where the hard iron had eaten into my skin. I am sure it hurt, but I felt numb, empty and utterly lost.
