Zein opened his eyes as he felt light footsteps approaching the room. Although he only had four hours of sleep, he was instantly alert. Despite his body feeling like it had just rolled around in a high-ranked dungeon, his mind was as fresh as it could get.
It could be because he was inside the Temple, or because his heart and soul were fed well.
He let out an unconscious smile and stroked the head still snuggling on his neck. Carefully, he slipped out of Bassena’s embrace, who was groaning and whining in his sleep at the loss of Zein’s warmth. He had to plant soothing kisses on the esper’s face until Bassena returned to sleep while clutching a pillow as a substitute.
Swiftly, Zein snatched a night robe to cover himself and opened the door before a small fist and a white paw could knock against it. He looked down and smiled at the pair of a girl and a white rabbit pausing with their hands in the air.
"Oh!" Elena exclaimed in a whisper and stepped back to let Zein slip outside and close the door. "Um...I’m sorry--did I wake you?"
"It’s fine; the sun is already up anyway," Zein replied casually while catching the white rabbit who jumped at him. "Are you here to ask me for breakfast?"
Elena nodded silently, glancing at the bedroom door for a second before following Zein to the couch. "Grandma told me you might return to the Federation right after, so I wonder if we can have breakfast together--umm, before you go..."
She looked down and fiddled with her robe, the deflated tone made Cloudy’s white ears go down too. The white rabbit snuggled deeper into Zein’s embrace, seemingly understanding that they might not be able to see each other for a long long time.
At least, not until Zein finished reclaiming the Deathzone.
How could Zein say no in the face of such sadness? He patted both the girl and the white rabbit fondly. "Sure, we can have breakfast together. We need to do it here, though, because my esper will be fussy when he wakes up and finds out I’m not around."
Elena perked up and clapped her hands carefully so as to not make a sound. "Oh, but is it alright? Won’t we wake him up?"
"It’s fine; he won’t wake up even if you scream beside him," Zein chuckled. "Don’t you realize I have been talking normally?"
Elena gasped, only now realizing that she was the only one whispering. She giggled and pointed toward the suite’s door. "Okay, then I’ll call the staff to bring the breakfast here--oh! Would it be alright if Grandma and Big Sis come too?"
"Sure."
Elena immediately scurried away, and Zein put Cloudy on top of the table. "Wait here while I change," he patted the white rabbit before going back to the bedroom.
Bassena was still curled up with a bunched blanket around him, sleeping soundly--and kept on sleeping soundly even while Zein washed his face and changed his clothes noisily. Even when Zein caressed and kissed the esper’s face, Bassena slept even deeper, surrounding himself with the guide’s scent that was left behind in the blanket.
This time, Zein wore his own clothes rather than the white and blue garments the Temple provided for his stay. Elena jutted her lower lips when she saw it, because it truly finalized that Zein was indeed going back that day.
"Are we really not going to see each other until I’m an adult?" Elena asked dejectedly. It seemed so so long to think that she might only be able to see Zein five or six years later.
"It’ll be nice if I can finish everything before five years," Zein muttered.
He had no idea how much stronger the Fallen Star could be when they took their sweet time, but making their move too hastily could result in annihilation. Well, he would believe in Radia’s judgment once they knew the latest condition of the Deathzone.
"Then, I’ll pray diligently so you can finish it quickly!" Elena clenched her fists and announced energetically.
Zein patted the girl’s head and smiled. "You can still call me before I go. Send me an email on your access day, or we can do video calls."
Elena gasped and turned to look at the Saintess. "Can I?"
"If you’re good at your study," the Saintess answered wisely.
"But I’m always good at my study!"
"That means it won’t be a problem for you," Zein told the girl, who once again gasped and giggled happily in response.
She had only been with Zein for three days, but she had already grown attached to the older guide. Perhaps because Zein felt so different from the priests in the Temple. The experiences that Zein had regarding the world outside were so fascinating to the girl, who had only known her orphanage and the Temple. It drove her to look outside more, to not become the Saintess who was confined by the wall of the safe-zone.
And now the older brother she had grown attached to had to go on an important mission for five years.
