Novel There's No Love In the Deathzone (BL) by Aerlev
Ron’s eyes flickered as he found himself trapped like a rat...or a squirrel. With his back touching the railing, he couldn’t help but face the berserker.
After avoiding the man for weeks, it was a big ordeal doing it when he wasn’t angry or annoyed. Why was he so flustered anyway? Was it because this uncle had seen him cry last time? It was indeed embarrassing to show his weakness like that.
But...if he had to be objective--which his teacher always told him to do--he started getting flustered easily after knowing that this uncle took over his father’s ’punishment’ in his place. Wasn’t that why he decided to get away from this uncle’s presence? And now this man was shoving his face in front of him.
Damn it!
Ron lowered his gaze; those intense dark eyes with sparking fire inside were not helping his case. He pressed his lips tight and shrunk himself inside his coat to hide whatever bodily reaction he might have.
This uncle wouldn’t hear his nervous gulping...right?
Thankfully, perhaps thinking he was being too harsh, Agni pulled back slightly, giving Ron a way to inhale deeply without the berserker’s smoke-and-leather scent invading his system.
Agni sighed softly. "I might not understand still, but just try."
Honestly, it wasn’t about whether or not Agni would understand. Ron was just...ashamed of his own reason. He had shown enough of his pathetic side to this Uncle, and he didn’t want to give the older man more ammunition.
But...that exhausted tone was rather unfair.
"I...don’t understand my father," Ron bit his lips.
It felt like a confession, and the quiet, dark environment seemed to support the atmosphere. Surprisingly, after the first sentence, he found it easier to proceed.
"Mother always told me that he’s a great person, and I did think he was cool...somewhat," Ron recalled the day he saw his father’s squad in the recording.
...right, this uncle was there too. Around...eight years ago, wasn’t it? No wonder Ron didn’t notice him--without the beard and darker hair, the berserker looked like a different person.
Ugh--not the time for reminiscence.
"But even so, I don’t understand," Ron continued. "Why did he seem to choose others rather than his family--or even himself?"
He lowered his head again as he felt both anger and shame mixing inside into confusion.
"Why did he constantly make a choice that would benefit others but not himself? I don’t understand!" he clutched his thighs so he wouldn’t scratch his arms again. "I don’t understand why we would chase a crazy person inside the Deathzone; I don’t understand why he didn’t think about us before making any decision, I don’t..."
He stopped and took a deep breath, shaking his head to stop the tears almost dripping from his eyes again. No, let’s not go there--this uncle already thought he was nothing more than a kid.
"I just want to know," Ron leaned back against the railing and threw his head back, staring at the dark ceiling. "That sense of duty that he has...is it worth it?"
Agni flinched slightly. It was like...having his inner thoughts being laid out. He felt strangely embarrassed, even though Ron was the one who confessed. He cleared his throat to hide his flusters. "And...you think you can understand that by going inside the Deathzone?"
"...I don’t know," Ron shrugged, rolling his head against the railing. "I just want to trace his step. There’s no way I can go to the military even if I get crazy, but...I can try working in the Borderland and going inside the Deathzone...like him..."
The scout stopped and straightened his back, staring at Agni again as he felt his annoyance back. "But you won’t let me," he pursed his lips, jutting out his lower lip and crossing his arms before looking away.
Agni raised his brows. Did this squirrel just sulk on him?
"Pfft--"
He didn’t plan to, but he couldn’t help the chuckle coming out, which gradually turned into a full-blown laugh.
"What the hell?" Ron smacked the berserker’s arm. Now that he felt annoyed, he could easily glare at the man. Weird.
"Yeah, what the hell," Agni chuckled and smiled wryly, looking at the dark jungle beyond the marsh. "We’re at the edge of hell, you know."
"Hmm..."
Ron turned around then, looking in the direction of the marsh. He propped his chin and stared at the Deathzone with clear, sharp eyes. Agni glanced at the notebook on the floor beneath the chair, which had fallen from the scout’s lap when they were arguing in agitation before.
Well...at least he knew that this kid truly didn’t have any suicidal thoughts. Perhaps because the so-called ’understanding’ was easily understandable for Agni, who shared the same thoughts, he could accept it better now.
"Fine," he said, pushing his chair back.
"What?"
Was this kid actually a psychopath? He shook his head from entertaining the thought that Nolan’s son was one. fɾēewebnσveℓ.com
