Chapter 663: Side Story 2. Dance of Flame and Shadow - 22

Agni woke up with a start, feeling his heart beating fast for a few seconds before finally blinking. When his eyes registered the brown hair strewn across his stretched-out arm, he let out a relieved sigh. frёeωebɳovel.com

The brown hair wasn’t as long and messy as in his dream, getting matured with the owner’s age. But it was still fluffy and felt nice every time Agni buried his face there. Sadly, he couldn’t call the younger man ’squirrel’ anymore--a banned word aside from ’kid’.

Oh, well--a smile price for getting him back. Agni smiled in satisfaction and pulled the sleeping man closer to him, ruffling the short brown hair. A lot of time had passed, and that young, delicate face had turned sharper, rougher, with several scars that would be visible under the sun. Those once sparkling eyes had turned deeper and number, and yet...they still warmed him like nothing could.

"Hmm..." Agni smiled wider and leaned down to kiss the scout’s eyelids.

It had been fourteen years, so he had forgotten how awful it was in the past. Looking at the persistent younger man who dragged him all the way into marriage, Agni couldn’t be more thankful. From the eyelids, his kiss traveled down to the firm cheek and thinly stubbled jaw.

"I told you I’m not doing it again," a hoarse voice scolded him, lower than what it used to be in the past.

Agni felt a bit guilty about influencing this kid to be a smoker. Nolan must be rolling in his grave. Heh--whatever; would it be worse than knowing his son becoming his rowdiest subordinate’s husband? He might have failed to protect this kid from making a foolish decision, but...he should be able to fulfill it now for the rest of his life.

He leaned down and kissed the protesting lips softly, prompting the sleepy brown eyes to open in confusion. For someone he thought would be pouncing on him, the berserker was kissing him softly, full of affection instead of lust.

How weird.

"...what’s wrong?" Ron grasped the berserker’s face and stared into the fuzzy dark eyes. They were slightly reddened as if the older man was just crying. "Did you have a nightmare?"

"Yeah..."

The answer surprised Ron. When was the last time he heard Agni had a nightmare? Ah...it was when Ron came back from the first leg of Operation Kronos, where he heard that Ron almost died from the fragment’s surprise beam.

But then, there was no reason to have any nightmares after they were away from the most dangerous thing.

"What is it? About my father?" Ron asked curiously.

"About us in the past."

The brown eyes narrowed. "Which one?"

"There could only be one, couldn’t there?" Agni smiled sheepishly.

Ron hummed and pushed the berserker off him so he could reach for the glass of water on the nightstand. The only bad thing that happened during their relationship was the time Agni kicked Ron out of the Borderland after spending one glorious night together. It set them apart for years--six years, to be exact. Ron still used it to instill guilt in the older man sometimes so he could get what he wanted.

But it was the first time he knew it was bad enough to be called a nightmare, and Ron...rather liked it. A lot, actually.

"I’m sorry," the berserker leaned his head on Ron’s shoulder, hugging the younger man from behind. He sounded so pitiful that Ron couldn’t hold his chuckle.

"Pfft--it’s been years and we got married," he put the glass down and leaned against the broad shoulder, glancing at the wistful dark eyes. It was kind of cute, seeing an old man being gloomy about the past break-up. "You bring it up now?"

"Because I dreamt about it," Agni shrugged, kissing the mark he made yesterday on the scout’s shoulder, before sighing into the darkened spot. "I was so stupid."

"Yeah, you were; it was an asshole move, you jerk!" Ron flicked the berserker’s forehead. "But..."

Agni tilted his head, waiting cautiously. For insurance, he tightened his grip on his husband’s waist. The benefit of not having a marriage certificate was that they had nothing to be torn, but also nothing to be used as their legal bond.

Which was both horrifying and thrilling. Just like their life.

"After I got older, I kind of got your point," Ron crossed his arms and looked up at the hotel’s ceiling. "Every time I see someone much younger, I think of protecting them, thinking that they deserve better."
