He looked at Paul and repeated, "You know very well what Marigold and I are like. Would you marry a woman like that?"

"What do you mean, a woman like that? Would this have happened if you hadn't touched her?" Paul was furious. Gilbert had spoken as if Marigold were a whore.

Gilbert couldn't be bothered to argue. He stood his ground. "Tell her that if the child is mine, she should abort it quickly. I won't accept the kid. And if it's not mine," he scoffed, "don't appear before me again."

After that, he made to leave. He had nothing more to say to Paul
