Gary agreed to her proposal to break up.

So far, neither of them had said a word. Gary wanted to say something to Celeste, but he stopped when he realized that she wasn't looking at him.

Gary couldn't express his guilt towards Celeste with words. He felt that this was normal no matter how harsh Celeste treated him.

He had expected Celeste to ignore him, but even then he would still take care of her.

He had to fulfill his duty as a man.

Gary felt very sad looking at her haggard face. He didn't know how to apologize or to express his regret. He just wanted to take good care of her.

When Lowell returned, he brought along a container of chicken soup and some bread.

Gary met Lowell at the door, neither of them entered the room.

Lowell looked into his tired eyes and asked, "How did it go?"

Gary shook his head, "She wants to break up." Lowell was stunned. He had expected this to happen. "What did you say? Are you agreeing to Celeste's suggestion to break up just like that?"

"I can only agree for now. Otherwise, she'd get very emotional, but I won't break up with her."

"Yeah, you can't break up." Lowell reached out and patted him on the shoulder. "Cheer up. You look pretty haggard. You ought to take care of your patient with some enthusiasm."

"There's no way for me to be enthusiastic." Gary forced a smile.

"Do you want me to come in?" Lowell asked.

"Go ahead. She hasn't spoken to me for the entire day. I'm worried that she'll get depressed if this continues." Gary turned to look at Celeste, who was in a daze in the ward.

She looked like a soulless puppet on the hospital bed. She was barely moving.

He was very worried, but didn't know how to speak to Celeste. There was only silence whenever he tried to speak. She completely ignored him.

Gary somehow felt that Celeste might be able to say a few words if Lowell came in.

Lowell nodded and said, "Well, I'll go in and prepare some food for her. If you have something else to do, go ahead but come back later to take over."

"I want to smoke." Gary frowned.

Hearing this, Lowell opened his mouth to speak but kept quiet in the end. It was rare for him to see Gary behave like this.

He had never been so haggard or suffered such a loss in his entire life. This was a critical blow to him.

Lowell pushed the door open and walked into the ward.

When he saw how haggard Celeste looked on the hospital bed, he couldn't help but feel sorry for her. He placed the lunch box by the bedside table, then pulled over a stool to sit down. He then looked at Celeste.

She came back to her senses after realizing that something was different. She looked up and saw Lowell. She was stunned but still smiled at him.

Lowell sighed inside. Celeste still maintained her basic sense of courtesy and etiquette. She really was a well-educated child.

"Do you feel better now?" Lowell asked.

"Much better. Thank you for your concern, Mr. Jones," Celeste said still smiling.

"Don't call me Mr. Jones. I'm just a few years older than you guys. I'm about the same age as Gary and Ernest. Just call me Lowell. Of course, if that feels inappropriate to you, you can call me Uncle.

Anything's fine."

Celeste said, "I'll call you Uncle then. I still owe Uncle Jones and Aunt Smith a favor."

"Yes, they've done me a favor as well," Lowell said.

"Uncle Jones and Aunt Smith are very nice people. You are all very nice," Celeste said softly.

"Uncle, I'm telling you this because I want you to convince Gary not to blame himself about this. It has nothing to do with him. It's just that the both of us aren't suited for each other."

"Why do you think that both of you aren't suited for each other?" Lowell looked at Celeste with confusion in his eyes.

He noticed that there was a very firm and warm light in Celeste's eyes. He knew that this girl was strong inside despite her appearance.

It was very obvious she wouldn't be changing her mind.

Especially now that she lost her child, she became even more resolute.

"Because he was very happy when he was with Janice. He never laughed like that when he was with me." Celeste laughed at herself. "Maybe I made him too depressed. I don't think it's right for us to be together. So, losing this child is the right time to end this relationship."

"He isn't a good match with Janice," Lowell answered this question without any hesitations.

Celeste smiled and didn't want to explain why. She was silent for a while before saying, "Uncle, you actually realized that Janice has feelings for Gary, don't you?"

Lowell was surprised. The girl in front of him looked so calm, but her question was so sharp. Lowell smiled bitterly.

"I had a hunch but I didn't tell you, so I'm feeling quite remorseful about what happened. If only I had warned her. Then, it wouldn't have ended up like this," Lowell said this seriously, "I'm truly sorry."

"Uncle, it has nothing to do with you. You've also been hurt and used." Celeste lowered her gaze. "When I was in England, I had reminded Gary about it, but its that he can't distance himself from Janice.

"There are some things that are meant to be. What happened must have hurt Gary pretty badly. You should go and console him as he's never truly been beaten by life before. I knew that he'd continue pestering me, even when I proposed a breakup. He didn't refuse and has agreed for now, only because he's worried about my health. He'll definitely be back at it again after this.

"That's only because I was the one who proposed the breakup and he can't accept rejection. We're both very tired."

Lowell had to admire her. She summed it up very

well.

Gary was this type of person. He might say nothing during a breakup, but he would probably find it hard to accept if someone else brought it up.
