Ernest froze. He hadn't expected Leah to ask him that.
Previously, his face was just slightly warm. But after Leah's question, he blushed as red as a tomato. Right then, he was embarrassed, but he couldn't tell her the truth.
Ernest could only sigh. "It's my first time taking care of someone like this. I'm not used to it."
"You blush if you're not used to something?" Leah laughed in suspicion and disbelief.
Ernest stiffened up again, and his handsome face turned redder.
He stopped talking. The more he spoke, the deeper the hole he dug for himself.
While seriously blushing, he wiped Leah's face, then went on to her hands.
He held her slender fingers in his big hand, gently wiping them one by one.
While he was doing that, he gave his full attention to her fingers, as though he was diligently carving a work of art.
It was Leah's turn to blush.
Ernest unwittingly looked up and saw that Leah's face had turned red too. Slightly taken aback, he smiled and asked, "Why are you blushing too?"
"Well, no one has ever taken care of me like this either. The person wiping my face and holding my hand to wipe it is a grown man. Would I still be a woman if I didn't blush?" Leah said bluntly. "Wait, I meant girl, not woman."
Upon hearing that, Ernest was flummoxed. He felt somewhat dizzy.
He understood the meaning behind her words.
A sense of joy rose in his heart. "Then keep blushing. I'll go fetch a new bucket of water to clean you up again."
"I think I'm already squeaky clean!" Leah muttered softly. "Are you a clean freak?"
Ernest shook his head. "Not really."
"I think you are. Stop denying it," she teased.
Ernest smiled. "The water is contaminated now. If there are viruses in it, it might interfere with your recovery. I think it's better to get another bucket of water."
Leah was stunned. She replied, "That seems to be reasonable."
"It doesn't just 'seem' reasonable. It is reasonable." Ernest got up and went to the washroom, lugging the bucket of water along with him.
Leah was experiencing inexplicably complicated feelings. She anticipated it, but she was shy at the same time.
Out of nowhere, she covered her face. She felt a little vexed when she thought about what she asked him. It was so idiotic.
Leah had no idea why she pestered him with her questions. She should've just let him go on. Anyway, she actually enjoyed the warm, comfy sensation of his hands on her face.
It was an addictive sort of comfort.
If only she wasn't down with a cold.
She began to understand why girls went to beauty salons for facials. Getting someone else to cleanse one's face felt so good.
After entering the bathroom, Ernest stood in front of the mirror, looking at his reflection. His face was visibly red.
It was the first time in forever.
He actually blushed.
Ernest turned on the tap to wash his face. The hot sensation on his face faded a lot. When he glanced in the mirror again, his complexion was much better.
He then filled the bucket up with water for Leah once again.
Meanwhile, Leah was covering her face in annoyance.
After a while, Ernest came back with the bucket of clean water.
Similar to what he just did, he wiped her face and hands.
They were more serious than previously. They were both blushing somewhat, but neither of them said anything because of the conversation they just had.
By the time he was done, Ernest's face had reddened again.
He returned to the washroom. At the sight of his blushing face in the mirror, he took a deep breath helplessly.
After walking out, he happened to see Leah taking off her pants.
Shocked, Ernest stopped her immediately. "Leah, what are you doing?"
"Taking off my pants. Didn't you tell me to take off my coat?" Leah turned around and looked at Ernest in confusion. But when she saw Ernest looking self-conscious, she suddenly came to a realization. Hurriedly, she piped up, "Oh, I'm wearing leggings underneath. My legs aren't bare inside. You don't have to get all embarrassed
about it. I'm not a flasher!"
That flustered Ernest even more.
Not only did Ernest have no way to refute that, he even watched Leah remove her pants in front of him.
She was indeed wearing a pair of black leggings underneath.
To be honest, she really wanted to stay awake and talk to Ernest, but her eyelids were heavy from drowsiness. When she closed her eyes, the corners of her lips quirked upwards, as if she was particularly happy.
She was glad that Ernest didn't leave.
After Leah fell asleep, Ernest got up and walked around the room. He went to the balcony to check on the two turtles they had bought.
They seemed to have grown a little bigger.
The turtles lay on the ground lazily. He peered at them, and they stared back at him with their small, beady eyes.
Ernest couldn't suppress a laugh.
After looking at them for a while, he then looked around the balcony. The succulents had grown particularly well, and the Echeveria derenbergii was beginning to have some colour to it.
All of the succulents were reddish in color after being under the sun. They looked extremely beautiful.
Ernest's lips curved in a smile unwittingly. He hadn't expected Leah to have such a green thumb. To be able to care for plants that well showed how caring she was.
Smiling, Ernest returned to Leah's bedroom. He sat by her bed and gently touched Leah's forehead to check her body temperature. It was normal.
It was fortunate that she was not feverish again. He let out a sigh of relief.
It was nearly four in the morning.
He lay at the edge of the bed and dozed off.
Perhaps because of all the fluid in her body from the drip, Leah woke up from the urge to use the toilet. However, when she opened her eyes, she was met with the sight of Ernest lying on the edge of the bed. She was blindsided and a little anxious.
He was so tired that he fell asleep there. He might catch a cold too, she thought.
Leah immediately reached out and shook him awake.
Ernest had yet to fall into a deep sleep, so he was roused right away. When he looked up and saw Leah awake, he instantly asked, "Do you feel alright?"
At his concern, Leah's heart swelled with warmth. She shook her head and said, "Go to my closet and get a new blanket, Ernest."
"Are you cold?" Ernest looked at her, concerned. At once, he reached out to touch her forehead. "Are you feeling feverish again?"
"No." Leah shook her head. "Go get it first."
"What for?" Ernest asked in surprise. He thought that it was because she came down with a fever again.
But Leah replied, "Obviously so we can share the bed."
