"Simon, didn't you say that you would reveal a lot of scandals to destroy Grace and Heinz and the Smith family? Why did you stop after one?"
Michael complained to Simon over the phone.
By then, Simon and Marry had returned to the Brown family home. They were finally reunited and were together 24/7.
It was as if they'd never parted in the beginning.
Simon answered the phone. He didn't hide anything from Marry as he turned on the speakerphone.
"I'm going to give up," Simon said in a slightly weary but determined voice.
"Give up?" Michael was stunned. His tone became annoyed as he asked, "Why do you want to give up?"
"Because I know that I can't defeat Heinz. It's a lost cause."
"Simon, are you a coward?" Michael roared.
Simon sneered and frowned as he reached out for Marry before agreeing, "True, I am a coward, but how about you? Why don't you go against them yourself? Why do you constantly try to involve me? I know that you're just trying to trick me, don't think that I'm oblivious to that."
Michael laughed coldly at his reply.
Simon snapped at the phone, "Stop laughing! I'm not falling for your schemes."
Then, he hung up the phone.
Marry looked up at him and asked, "How did you get involved with such a person?"
"It was Michael who came to me in the first place," Simon explained, "I was hesitant on whether to get revenge and didn't do anything at first. Then, Michael came to see me and we decided to work together against Heinz."
Marry replied, "Well, you decided to take action against Grace in the end. I thought you'd go for Heinz directly instead of her."
Simon was stunned. He seemed to realize something and immediately looked at Marry nervously, "I only chose to target Grace because she was an easy target, and hurting her would affect Heinz. That's why I took action against Grace and Celeste first. Furthermore, Celeste shares a relationship with Cindy, and she's Gary's girlfriend. So, it makes the most sense that I start my revenge with them."
Marry nodded, "It doesn't feel like a true victory if you hurt women, does it?"
Simon smiled sheepishly and admitted, "Well, after you got back together with me, I feel like forgetting all my past grudges. It's too tiring."
Marry nodded in agreement, "It's best if you can put it all behind you. Let's just live our lives properly from now on."
"Are you sure you want to settle down with me?" Simon looked at Marry in uncertainty.
Marry looked up at him and said in a serious tone, "We're in our forties, and we can't afford to keep playing games like this any longer. When your parents died, I was there, but you weren't."
Simon stiffened and pursed his lips.
Not being by his parents' side when they passed was a scar in Simon's heart.
Marry sighed, "At the time, I had a sudden realisation. I was struck by how lonely we were. They had their relatives and me by their side when they passed, but what about us?"
Simon was stunned.
For a moment, he was rendered speechless.
Marry gave a wry smile and said, "I ask myself all the time. What am I doing this for? I've already lost everything. Grace, Alice and I used to be close, but my jealousy ruined everything."
Simon was also moved by what Marry said.
He gave Marry a complicated look, his lips trembling. It took some time before he finally decided to express his thanks, "Marry, thanks for being with my parents when they passed. If you weren't there, their passing might have been very lonely."
"Yeah, I hope they were comforted by my presence," Marry smiled gently, "Simon, you've never really given much thought to the future, right?"
Simon was stunned and looked at Marry, hesitating yet anticipating what she would say next.
Marry sat up and took out a diary from the bedside table.
Simon was a little surprised.
Marry handed it to him and said, "Your parents wrote this for you. You probably haven't noticed it, right?"
When did he ever notice it?
Simon was cast adrift after he was released from prison, living everyday meaninglessly like an aimless zombie with no hopes nor dreams.
He wanted to perish together with Heinz and Grace, but he did not have the courage to do so.
He couldn't do it.
He wasn't meant for this anyway.
His hands trembled as he gently flipped open the pages of the diary.
The moment his eyes met the words on the paper, Simon froze.
His eyes welled up with tears and his lips quivered.
Marry sighed as she saw him like this.
Simon stared at the words on the diary. His mother had left them for him.
His mother's handwriting was very neat, delicate and beautiful.
'Simon, when you see this, I am most likely gone.'
Simon couldn't help but purse his lips. He couldn't help but bite his lips and leaned his head backwards to stop his tears from falling.
'My son, you've been very fortunate to be released, so don't do anything stupid again. You know you're no match for those people, so it would be better if you appreciated the people who were there for you. You should get back together with Marry and live a good life. There's no one else who loves you more than she does."
Simon shut his eyes. He felt as if something was about to burst out of his eye sockets. He wanted to cry.
He knew that his mother's heart was aching when she wrote this.
She knew what Heinz was capable of, and she knew that Simon was no match for him.
However, the most important thing was that his mother always thought he was right.
Simon couldn't help but feel ashamed.
He felt that he had gone astray.
He was way off the right track.
Hence, he couldn't let himself go on like this any further.
He closed the diary and took a deep breath. After a while, he looked up at Marry.
Marry's eyes were also teary.
Their eyes met, and Marry realized something.
She completely understood Simon's mood at this moment. She didn't need to say anything else to know what Simon was thinking.
Marry understood how much Simon missed his parents and how sorry he felt.
He did not read the diary any further because he was afraid of crying in front of her.
Marry wanted to avoid talking about it, but she reached out in the end to hug Simon. She spoke gently, "It's fine, everything's in the past now. Your parents' only wish is for you to live happily."
That was most likely what every parent wished for their child: for them to be happy.
Simon looked at Marry. His throat was tight and he seemed to have lost his voice. However, he tried his best to keep his emotions in check.
He really wanted to burst out crying.
"Marry, let's have a child," He finally muttered after much difficulty.
Marry paused before she hugged Simon tightly. Her tone was sad as she replied, "Simon, I'm in my forties. I don't know if I can have a child. Simon, if I can't get pregnant, I won't blame you if you find a younger woman to spend your life with. I'm sure your parents want grandchildren as well. I really don't think I can have a child."
Marry was sad.
She would be very upset whenever she thought of pregnancy.
She was sure that it was karma. She must have done too many evil deeds for God to punish her by forbidding her to bear a cute child of her own.
