The ICU rescue stopped, and the doctor pushed open the door and walked out, not knowing how to break the news to the kneeling Brett.

Brett lifted his head and looked at the doctor standing in front of him. He wanted to stand up and ask him about Izabella's condition but his legs suddenly felt extremely heavy, unable to move even in the slightest.

He opened his mouth and croaked, "How is Izabella?"

"Mr. Windham, I'm sorry, we did our best."

It felt like his brain was hit by a bomb, and he lost the ability to think for a moment - not even knowing where he was or what was happening.

His piercing gaze had turned dull and lifeless.

Brett had never been this scared before; he hardly ever cried. From what he could remember, he hadn't cried more than five times in his life. But now, his tears fell down uncontrollably.

He desperately grabbed onto the doctor's white coat like it was his lifeline.

The usually arrogant Brett, someone who would never say a kind word to anyone, was now down on his knees, pleading for the first time in his life.

Holding the doctor's coat, he begged, "Please save her, she's only 24 years old."

Yes, Izabella was only 24. That's when it hit Brett - how young she was. She was in the prime of her life, but now she was on the verge of losing it all.

Despite his brain was trying to shut out the outside world, his ears still caught the doctor's words in the latter part.

"As for your wife, Ms. Salotti, we have spent six hours trying to save her. She was injected with a drug that destroys nerves - one dose normally causes unbearable pain. But five doses were found in her system, leading to brain damage and bleeding."

Everything went dark before Brett, and after quite some time, he hoarsely asked, "And then?"

"Now she lives in a vegetative state." the doctor whispered.

In the midst of this overwhelming pain, he felt suffocated, yet he dared not take a deep breath. It felt as if inhaling would bring not oxygen but icy shards, freezing his organs, causing pain in every part of his body.

"Mr. Windham, you can go in now."

Brett remained still, and after a moment, he blinked his dry eyes and asked softly, "Vegetative people can wake up, right?"

"There is a chance for people in a vegetative state to wake up, but Ms. Salotti's situation is different. She is in the late stages of stomach cancer, and even if she woke up, there wouldn't be much time left for her."

"Did you just say she has late-stage stomach cancer?"

The doctor hesitated and nodded.

"Heh," Brett let out a laugh as he shakily stood up, "You guys are all in on this scam, huh?"
