Elis looked at Tiffany. "Why didn't you ask what surgery it was?"
Tiffany faltered. "That's your privacy."
Elis smiled. "There's nothing to keep secret. I just had an abortion, that's all."
Despite her smile, there was a thin veil of sadness in her eyes.
"An abortion?" Tiffany was extra sensitive to things like that because of her pregnancy. "You…"
Elis looked guilty. She lowered her eyes and said softly, "I didn't know anything about it, so I took a lot of medication. The doctor said the volume affected the baby, so it would be better to abort it."
Tiffany's ears rang. "Do all babies have to be aborted once you've taken medication?"
"No," Elis said. "It's best to stay away from it, though."
She looked at Tiffany's belly. "You should be some months along now, right?"
"Yeah." Tiffany reflexively shielded her belly, feeling worried.
She'd taken some medication. The birth control pills had already expired, but who could be sure whether they would affect the baby? She'd even had an IV drip and applied a medicative ointment.
She didn't have any experience with this and couldn't help but feel worried after hearing about Elis' experience. After leaving Elis' hospital room, Tiffany immediately headed to the clinic to see a doctor.
The doctor looked worried after hearing about Tiffany's condition. Still, it was hard to be sure about these things. All the doctor could tell Tiffany was that she had to make up her mind early if she wanted to get an abortion.
But if she wanted to keep the baby, she could only wait until the baby was three or four months along to get an anomaly scan. If there was a high risk of the baby ending up deformed, they would have to induce birth to get the baby out.
The doctor explained the differences between the two surgeries and also their respective risks. She also told Tiffany to discuss with her family if she wasn't sure what to do.
How could Tiffany have the nerve to bring it up to Teresa? Her sister had her own problems.
Tiffany sat up in bed and glared at him. "I told you to leave. Don't you understand? I want to be alone, so can you stop bothering me? Do you know how cheap you're making yourself out to be, William?"
He was taken aback by her outburst. Then, he stood up and said, "I know you're in a bad mood. It's normal for pregnant women to have mood swings, so I won't get mad at you for this. I've already spoken to my parents about this. I'll take you home tomorrow to meet them."
Tiffany shook her head. "I won't go."
She lay down again and cocooned herself in her sheets.
William stared at her back briefly before saying slowly, "You will."
Tiffany shut her eyes. She didn't want to waste her breath on him anymore.
"Get a good night's sleep. I'll be here bright and early tomorrow morning to pick you up."
With that, William left.
