"William?" Tiffany called softly.

The man in the corner seemed to stir like a plucked string, slowly regaining some life.

He raised his head slowly, turning toward Tiffany. Those desolate eyes appeared to regain vigor in an instant.

William opened his mouth, but no sound came out. His voice was gone.

The dim room made Tiffany feel suffocated.

She set down her bag and drew open the curtains, letting the sunlight stream in. William didn't stop her but shrank back into the shadows when the sunlight flooded in.

Tiffany didn't try to converse with him. Instead, she began tidying up the room. Soon, she had the room clean and bright again.

She turned to find William still sitting there, staring unblinkingly at her.

Tiffany bent down, picking up the dirty sheets from the floor. "I'm going downstairs now to put these in the washing machine. After they're washed, I'll hang them out to dry. Do you want to come?"

William continued to stare at her, showing no reaction. He was like a puppet.

"Okay, I'll go then." Tiffany didn't try to persuade him and walked out with her bundle.

As she reached the bottom of the stairs, several maids looked at her in surprise.

Tiffany saw them staring behind her, so she stopped and turned back.

William had followed her downstairs and stopped when she did.

Tiffany ignored him and asked the maid, "Where's the laundry room?"

The maid pointed her in the direction.

Tiffany carried the bundle that way. When she moved, William followed.

The commotion in the living room drew Joyce's and Donald's attention from the dining room.

Donald put his arm around her shoulders and assured her, "With Tiffany here, William will get better. Don't worry too much, okay?"

Tiffany checked the time, then stood up. "I should go."

But William grabbed her hand and showed her his phone. "I had the maid make chia seed pudding for you. Have some before you leave."

Tiffany shook her head. "No thanks, I'm not used to eating that."

"It's for the baby. You're too thin. You need nutrition."

Then, the maid arrived with the pudding.

William picked it up and spooned some out, bringing it to Tiffany's lips. The motion was tender and gentle.

But Tiffany stepped back. She was uneasy seeing William like this. It reminded her of how he used to feed Brianna.

"I don't want any, I'm leaving…"

As Tiffany turned, she heard a shattering sound behind her, and the maid screaming.
