"Yes, it's me," Helen said.
She tilted her head and glanced past the plump woman, confirming that this was indeed her home.
Moments later, Wyatt emerged from behind the woman, greeting her with a cheerful grin. "Helly, you're back!"
"Uncle Wyatt?" Helen exclaimed, taken aback. "What are you doing here?"
"I came to check on you," Wyatt said, stepping forward and introducing the woman next to him. "This is your godmother, Eva. Why don't you two say hello?"
"God…mother?" Helen repeated, a bit uncertain.
Eva Newman nodded and replied, "Yes, please come in."
She then turned and walked inside.
Helen looked at Eva's plump figure and then back at the slender, refined Wyatt, whispering, "Is she Tonya's mother?"
Wyatt nodded slightly, his gaze following Eva with affection. "Isn't she beautiful?"
Helen quickly agreed with a nod, though she felt a bit exasperated.
"Uncle Wyatt, I thought you only cared about Tonya, not her mother," Helen joked as she took off her shoes.
"What are you talking about?" Wyatt shot back, rolling his eyes. "Do you really think I'm that irresponsible?"
Helen took another look at Wyatt, noting his enduring charm and well-maintained figure. He certainly had the luxury to indulge in a bit of irresponsibility if he desired.
"Of course not," Helen reassured him.
"Why should it matter what I say if you've got nothing to hide?" Eva retorted boldly, rolling her eyes.
Turning to Helen, she added, "Wyatt mentioned you're an exceptional cook. We've come all this way and haven't had a chance to eat. We were hoping you could prepare one of your wonderful home-cooked meals for us. I hope it's not too much trouble at this hour."
"Oh, not at all," Helen replied cheerfully, slipping off her coat as she made her way into the kitchen. "The ingredients are all ready; I just need to start cooking. Please, make yourselves comfortable while I prepare a few simple dishes. Dinner will be ready before you know it."
"Don't go overboard," Wyatt added. "It's best not to eat too much before bed—"
Before he could finish, Eva gave him a sharp slap on the arm. "Why do you always have to butt in?"
Wyatt sighed in frustration. "What's the issue now?"
"It's none of your business," Eva replied curtly as she moved to sit on the other side of the room.
