In the CEO's office at Destiny Corporation, Graham ended his phone call and glanced over at the poised man lounging in the chair.
"M-Mr. Sheridan," he began, a trace of unease in his voice.
Otto looked over, a wry smile on his lips. "Is my face really that unsettling? It's been ages—are you still not used to it?"
Before Graham could answer, there was a knock on the door. Laura walked in briskly, carrying a stack of documents.
"Here are the company's development plans for the next five years, along with a list of all the unprofitable projects from the past year," Laura said flatly, tossing the files onto the coffee table in front of Otto.
With his feet resting on the table, Otto narrowly missed being hit by the files. He instinctively shifted aside and remarked, "Seriously, Laura, you might want to rethink your attitude toward your boss."
"Assuming you still remember you're the boss," Laura said with a touch of sarcasm, "Graham and I handle nearly all the company's operations, working ourselves to exhaustion to deliver results.
"And now, just because someone's had a sudden change of heart, projects we've been working on for months are getting shelved. Given the circumstances, I don't think anyone could keep smiling."
"Well…" Otto faltered, glancing at Graham for support.
Graham shrugged and leaned back in his leather chair, clearly uninterested in getting involved.
How heartless.
With a deep sigh, Otto sat up, his gaze growing wistful as he looked at Laura. "Love comes from unexpected places and runs deep. Once emotions are involved, they're beyond our control.
"I'm afraid I'm not good enough. Everything I'm doing is meant to show Helen a different side of me, hoping she'll accept me for who I am. Until this relationship reaches a clear outcome, I'll be plagued by anxiety day and night. You two are my closest allies—can't I rely on you?"
It was rare to see Otto so vulnerable, and for a moment, both Graham and Laura were overcome with sympathy.
"Alright," Laura conceded, slipping her hands into the pockets of her high-waisted pants. "I knew sticking with you would come with its challenges. Go ahead and protect her; we'll keep an eye on Destiny Corporation for you."
As soon as she finished speaking, Otto's mood brightened considerably. He sprang up, approached Laura, and gave her a solemn pat on the shoulder.
"It's obvious that the situation between your dad and Helen isn't as simple as it seems," Eva said with a serious expression.
She added, "If I don't keep a close eye on her and ensure she faces some difficulties, Helen might end up claiming a significant portion of the Stone family's fortune."
"What nonsense are you talking about?" Tonya grumbled. "Those rumors were put to rest ages ago. Besides, Helen is engaged to a guy who's talented, attractive, and well-off. What could she possibly want from Dad? Is it because of his age or his wrinkles?"
"Hey, watch how you talk about your father!" Eva said, giving Tonya's arm a light smack.
"I was just joking," Tonya said with a playful pout.
"They say a daughter is her father's little angel, but it seems like you might have let that halo slip a bit. Please avoid jokes like that—your dad is very sensitive about his image. When you make fun of his age or appearance, it can really hurt his feelings." Eva's tone softened considerably as she spoke about Wyatt.
Tonya looked at her with surprise and said teasingly, "I didn't realize you cared so much about Dad…"
