Chandler kept driving out of the suburbs and entered a courtyard.
In the courtyard, there were two simple red brick houses with yellow light bulbs hanging at the front. In Glendale, where every inch of space was precious, the buildings looked like relics from the previous century.
The main door of the brick house was open. An old man in a straw hat stood by the door with a lantern in his hand, seeming like he had been waiting for a long time.
Chandler held Helen's hand and went up to greet the old man, "Mr. Norris, I'm sorry to bother you so late."
"Not at all," Isaac Norris answered kindly. "This is my job, after all."
He then took a look at Helen and uttered, "This must be Mrs. Newton. She is obviously blessed. You both are truly a match made in heaven."
Helen felt a little embarrassed and thanked him.
"Then, I shall leave you both alone." Isaac handed the lantern to Chandler. "Take this."
With that, he went into the brick house.
Chandler turned to look at Helen and said gently, "Helly, close your eyes."
Helen frowned. "It's so dark here, do I still have to close my eyes?"
Chandler held her hand and coaxed softly, "Yes, believe me."
Perhaps it was because his tone was too enticing, or being with him naturally lifted her spirits; she closed her eyes obediently. Then, she walked forward step by step under his guidance.
After a few steps, she stepped onto the wooden floor and smelled a faint fragrance brought by the night breeze.
"Helly, lift your feet. We're going up the stairs," Chandler instructed gently.
Helen followed his instructions. She ascended about 10 steps before walking on level ground again. She could sense it when Chandler put down the lantern and went to stand behind her.
He was covering her eyes with his warm palm gently. Then, he slowly moved it and said softly, "You may open your eyes now."
"You're so annoying!" Helen punched his chest lightly. "You did it on purpose. You deliberately made my cry."
Chandler felt sorry as he wrapped his arms around her and embraced her. "Helly, I love you."
"I know."
"You don't know." Chandler refuted stubbornly, "You're too young, and you haven't experienced much. I claim you as my own out of selfishness, but I'll do my best to make your life more complete.
"I know you're not in the mood for a wedding now, so I'm giving you this flower field as a gift. Let this purple night serve as a temporary substitute for our wedding."
"But you're very busy and tired. I don't want you to do too much for me." Helen sniffled and leaned against him.
"No matter how busy or tired I am, those are just work. You're what's most important, and I won't let them affect our quality of life.
"You're at the right age to enjoy the beauty of love, and I'll give you all my romance without reservation."
