Mason clenched his fists, struggling to contain his frustration. After glaring at Sadie for a moment, he turned and stormed off.
Sadie stood there, her face unwavering as she watched him depart. With a contemptuous scoff, she muttered, "How dare you think you have any claim on me? You must be deluding yourself."
Though she had managed to dismiss the bothersome Mason, Sadie's mind remained troubled.
With the calligraphy competition just days away, she was running out of time to perfect Iris' style. To make matters worse, she still hadn't been able to obtain any additional pieces of Iris' calligraphy.
At the same time, she was also having difficulty devising a compelling reason to request such a substantial amount of money from her family.
As Mason's figure vanished beyond the female dormitory, Sadie suddenly remembered the anonymous text message she had received earlier. She quickly pulled out her phone and typed, "Let's meet and talk."
Although she wasn't expecting much, a reply arrived almost immediately as she was about to put her phone away.
When she opened the message, it revealed only an address—an upscale café located in the downtown area.
Without a second thought, Sadie turned and left the campus.
At about three or four in the afternoon, the café was lively with patrons. Sadie walked in and paused at the entrance, surveying the room for the person she was supposed to meet.
Before she could take another step, a hand emerged from a nearby aisle. "Ms. Fletcher, it's a pleasure to finally meet you."
Sadie turned to see a well-dressed man with glasses, exuding an air of sophistication and intellect. Her initial hesitation melted away as she extended her hand for a handshake. "Likewise. How should I address you?"
"My name is Colin Craig," he replied.
Colin, however, remained calm and unruffled. Stirring his coffee slowly, he replied in a measured tone, "When someone is truly determined to uncover something, they will always find a way. Ms. Fletcher, all you need to know is that I'm here to support you, not to oppose you."
"I believe there's been a misunderstanding," Sadie said, adopting a condescending tone. "I came here out of sheer curiosity. I don't have any issues that need your help."
Even though he saw through her pretense, Colin chose not to disclose his offer outright.
With a knowing smile, he said, "I understand, Ms. Fletcher. Someone as accomplished and attractive as you must have many people eager to support you. What I'm curious about is whether I might have the chance to be one of those who can call themselves your friend."
After a brief pause, Colin pulled out a checkbook and signed his name right in front of Sadie.
With a smile, he slid the check across the table and said, "Consider this a token of my sincerity. Feel free to write in any amount you need, Ms. Fletcher. You can be assured that it will be honored by any major bank."
