Ryan stole a glance at Helen. After receiving her nod of approval, he and his two teammates followed Vince out.
Just as they left, Scarlett entered through the side door.
"Mr. Newton, you're back," she said with a smile. "Would you like me to prepare a late-night snack?"
Ignoring her question, Chandler wrapped his arm around Helen and led her upstairs.
"Ms. Spencer," Scarlett called out, stopping them in their tracks.
Chandler paused, glancing back slowly. "What are you trying to pull now?"
Feeling uneasy under his gaze, Scarlett quickly turned her attention to Helen, adopting a sarcastic tone. "Oh, it's nothing. I just wanted to ask Ms. Spencer something.
"Earlier, she mentioned that no outsiders were allowed on the second floor, but she just spent quite a while up there with Ryan. So, does that rule still apply?"
Scarlett paused for a moment, changing her tone. "Those paparazzi have no sense of boundaries or ethics. If they hadn't followed us, Mr. Ferrer and Ms. Spencer could have spent the whole evening together.
"Fortunately, Mr. Spade showed up within the hour to intervene; otherwise, everyone at Grand Cathay would be buzzing about how close Ms. Spencer and Ryan really are," she muttered, her tone laced with suspicion.
Helen couldn't help but chuckle. Though Scarlett seemed to be congratulating her, each comment was clearly aimed at stirring Chandler's suspicions about her relationship with Ryan.
As expected from a journalist, Scarlett was a master at twisting words.
Helen turned to her, crossing her arms over her chest. "So, are you suggesting my relationship with Ryan is questionable just because we spent half an hour alone on the second floor? Is that what you're getting at?"
Helen appeared to be a harmless college student, but when she wasn't smiling, she radiated a fearsome and commanding presence.
Despite her experience in high-stakes situations, Scarlett was momentarily taken aback. After a brief pause, she stammered, "I… I just forgot for a moment. Besides, there are many kinds of journalists, and I didn't know about Ryan's background."
Her last statement carried a hint of confidence. She had only learned about Ryan through the paparazzi, so it wasn't technically a lie.
"Is that so?" Helen replied, a smirk playing on her lips. "Then why did you feel the need to tell Chandler that I spent half an hour alone with Ryan?"
"I was just stating the facts," Scarlett retorted defiantly. "Aunt Priscilla asked me to stay, so it's my responsibility to keep an eye on the household.
"You've only been married a short time, yet you bring another man into your and your husband's private space. Can you really say you haven't done anything wrong?"
