Perhaps due to her pregnancy, Ursula fell asleep almost as soon as she got into the car.
When she woke, the sight of the familiar mountain roads outside the window instantly chased away any lingering drowsiness.
She turned to Adrian in surprise, her voice laced with alarm. "What are we doing here? Stop the car! I want to go back!"
Adrian remained unfazed, his hands steady on the wheel. "We're getting married soon. As your future husband, it's only right that I come and pay my respects to my future in-laws."
In that instant, Ursula realized they had arrived in her hometown. Ahead, she could make out the familiar outline of her family's house.
It had been over ten years since she had last been here.
It wasn't that Ursula didn't want to return but that she hadn't been able to bring herself to do so.
However, she now had no choice but to give in to Adrian's insistence. After all, she couldn't risk the well-being of the child she was carrying.
The car soon pulled up to the gates of the Gabin residence, where her parents, Joanne Matherson and Randy Gabin, had been waiting. As soon as the car stopped, they hurried over, opening the passenger door and helping Ursula out.
"Ursula, is it really you? You're home at last!" Joanne sobbed, tears falling freely. "I've missed you more than you know! How could you be so cruel, leaving us all these years?"
Randy's eyes were swollen with emotion, his voice trembling with a mix of anger and sorrow. "You ungrateful daughter! If you hadn't returned, your mother and I would have died with nothing but regret!"
Familial love was too fragile to withstand such raw emotion. Ursula had kept her distance for so long, knowing she wouldn't have the strength to face a moment like this.
But when she saw Randy and Joanne, their hair now streaked with gray, her resolve finally crumbled. She fell into their arms, her sobs erupting in a torrent of grief.
The trio leaned on each other as they entered the house, silently exchanging the years of pain and longing that had accumulated during their time apart.
"What do you mean?" Joanne asked, her tone turning serious. "Now that you're expecting, why wouldn't you be planning to get married? After all these years of living on your own, it's time to settle down. If you don't act fast, someone else might snatch him up!"
"Mom!" Ursula's voice trembled with frustration. "I'm your daughter, for heaven's sake! Why do you always defend him? What if he turns out to be a bad person? It's your first time meeting him, and you're already treating him like family."
At the dinner table, Randy and Adrian were almost inseparable, laughing and clinking glasses as if they'd known each other forever. Meanwhile, Ursula felt like an outsider, quietly overshadowed by their easy camaraderie.
"Enough of that," Joanne said sincerely, holding Ursula's hand. "Even if your dad and I might seem a little biased, our hearts are still with you.
"Over the years, Adrian has been the one taking care of us. He never complains about the farm work and always rushes over from the city when we need help.
"When your dad was hospitalized last year, Adrian stayed with us the entire time, never once complaining. If it hadn't been for him, your dad and I would have really struggled."
Ursula was unaware of this side of Adrian; she had no idea he had been looking after her family so well all this time
