From the sound of it, it seemed like two groups were in the middle of a gunfight, nearing its conclusion. One side's gunfire was sparse and intermittent, while the other was firing relentlessly, their firepower far more intense.

"The enemy of my enemy is my friend," Abigail thought, considering the option of teaming up with the stronger side. With that in mind, she followed the sound of the gunfire.

By the time she arrived, however, the battle was already over.

She observed the scene carefully from a distance. When she spotted James leading the team, she stepped out of her hiding spot and made her way toward them.

"What are you guys doing here?" Abigail asked.

"It's a long story, but right now, we need to focus on getting the hostages out. Ms. Fitzgerald, you've been in the safe room before. Do you still remember the passcode?"

Although Destiny Corporation had secured the area, James wasn't taking any chances. His priority was to get the hostages out as quickly as possible before anything went wrong.

Abigail nodded and recited the six-digit code.

James immediately directed one of his subordinates to try the code on the keypad, but the display flashed "WRONG."

"How could this be?"

Unwilling to give up, Abigail stepped forward and tried the code herself. When the same error appeared, she fell silent.

"Zac must have changed the code before he left. He's always been overly cautious. I'll call Mr. Lincoln and see if he can hack into the system remotely."

With that, James grabbed his phone, ready to make the call.

"Why make things so complicated?" Abigail interrupted, raising a hand. She stepped closer to the door, running her fingers over its surface. "Do you have any explosives?"

"What are you suggesting?" James asked, momentarily stunned.

Abigail looked at him incredulously. "Just blow it open. What's the hold-up? Do you feel bad for the door?"

"Why would I feel bad? The door's not even Destiny Corporation's property," James replied. "I'm just worried about the person inside."

As the woman wheeled herself closer, James' heart raced wildly in his chest. He stared at her, sweat pooling in his palms, warmth surging uncontrollably to his face.

His thoughts raced in turmoil. What was this sensation? Could it be caused by the needle in his chest?

Hearing the noise, Abigail hurried over. She froze at the sight of James lying on the floor, his eyes rolling back into his head.

She glanced at the woman with surprise. "You know how to use silver needles? Why didn't you use one on me when I barged in earlier?"

"I don't know. Maybe because we're both women."

"…I figured you'd say it's because I'm too beautiful, and you couldn't focus with my face in the way."

For the first time, a faint smile curved on the woman's lips. "You are beautiful."

As her smile flashed before him, James felt his head spin. Within moments, darkness closed in, and he slipped into unconsciousness.
