The expression on Amelia's face was one of utter disbelief, which left Helen and Chandler completely bewildered.
Helen, in particular, felt a strange vibe from Amelia's gaze.
"What's wrong, Aunt Amelia?" Chandler asked.
Amelia snapped out of her reverie and hastily regained her composure. "Oh, nothing. I'm sorry, Helen. I didn't mean to zone out like that."
Then she averted her gaze. However, her fidgety hands betrayed her confusion.
Helen's heart skipped a beat. She could tell Amelia had something on her mind but just couldn't say it.
"Chandler… Helen… Why don't you guys take a seat? I'll go upstairs and change. I'll be right back," Amelia said before making a hurried exit.
Helen frowned and was puzzled by Amelia's behavior. She tugged at Chandler's sleeve and whispered, "What's wrong with Aunt Amelia?"
He also noticed Amelia's strange behavior earlier but tried to downplay it. "Don't worry about it."
Unbeknownst to them, Amelia rushed upstairs and slammed the door behind her. She headed straight to the vanity table and opened the drawer to reveal a decorative box inside.
After a moment's hesitation, she opened the box, revealing an old black-and-white photograph inside. The photo depicted a young woman who bore a striking resemblance to Helen.
Half an hour later, Amelia descended the stairs. Instead of approaching the couple, she lingered in the foyer and quietly observed Helen in the yard.
As if sensing Amelia's presence, Helen turned and locked her eyes with Amelia. Amelia quickly calmed down and approached them.
"Aunt Amelia, are you okay?" Helen asked.
Amelia stared at Helen intently and held Helen's hand. "I don't know why, but I felt an instant connection with you the first time I saw you. Where is your hometown? Is it in Glendale?"
Just before they departed, Amelia pulled Helen aside and handed her a cash envelope. "Here, this is a gift from me. Now that you're studying in Glendale, you and Chandler should come over and visit more often."
Helen felt a bit sheepish, accepting the envelope.
Chandler chimed in, "Go ahead and take it. It's Aunt Amelia's way of showing she cares."
Helen accepted it with a shy smile. "Thanks, Aunt Amelia."
"You're welcome. Drive safely." Amelia watched their car pull away, and her smile gradually faded.
The housekeeper noticed her sudden change in demeanor and quickly asked, "Mrs. Thompson, what's the matter?"
Amelia snapped back to reality and masked her emotions. "Nothing, it's fine."
