Was this what happened when they tried to make things work? Chandler couldn't help but wonder how important he was to Helen.

Helen quickly caught on to his last sentence on the phone and detected a glimmer of hope in his last words. "What did you mean by that?"

There was no sign of coming clean. Chandler had nothing to say. He opened Sare's profile on his phone and approached Helen. He took her hand and handed her the phone.

Once she gripped it, he turned and left without looking back. Helen wanted to call him back, but couldn't utter a sound. Glancing at the phone, she understood immediately.

Watching Chandler's figure disappear into the night, she sighed deeply.

Helen didn't know when she became so attuned to this man that he affected her mood. Even now, without a word exchanged, her heart sank in tandem with his retreating figure.

Chandler had said he despised deception most. And she had crossed that line.

But Helen didn't consider hiding her identity for self-preservation to be unforgivable. Moreover, her role as a translator only materialized after they met. She was yet to be given the right chance to reveal it.

It wasn't her way of doing things. How could she showcase all her skills to Chandler? She couldn't and wouldn't do that to impress Chandler.

Suddenly, the phone vibrated. There was a notification from Chandler's WhatsApp. His phone unlocked, and she saw messages from work and the Newton brothers.

Staring at the screen, Helen smiled wryly. "He does trust me."

Shortly after, she composed herself and silently put the phone back in her bag. Then, she headed toward the dormitory as if nothing happened.

"Oh, got it. Thanks." Helen groggily got up, threw on a jacket, and hurried downstairs.

She spotted Gerard standing by the dorm entrance with his hands clasped behind his back. She quickened her pace and jogged over.

"Mr. Ziegler, what brought you here so early?"

Helen shivered as the cold wind grazed her neck, and she hugged her coat tighter. Fall in Glendale consisted of biting chills in the mornings and evenings. One could easily catch a cold or fever if unprepared.

Gerard could barely contain his delight. "Helen, you do know about passing the preliminary exam, right?"
