Helen forced a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "You know, Kendrick, sometimes you could afford to hold back the brutal honesty."
Kendrick's face contorted with embarrassment. He wanted to lighten the mood with a joke, but the tension was too thick for humor to break through.
"Never mind. Just pick something at random. I'm going to catch up on some sleep," Helen said, dismissing him with a wave of her hand as she turned toward the door.
"Oh, look who it is—Ms. Spencer who picked the dud. What's the matter? Realizing your taste is off and trying to bail?" Freddie's taunting voice cut through the room.
Helen shot him a look of icy disdain.
Helen arched an eyebrow. Her voice was dripping with mock indifference. "Well, at least I've actually managed to unveil something. You, on the other hand, haven't even landed a single one. Just drifting around like you're lost—what exactly are you hoping to find?"
Freddie's casual demeanor vanished, replaced by a sharp, defensive edge. His eyes narrowed.
Helen's smile grew, sly and knowing. "It looks like my hunch was right. Your 'secret weapon' is starting to pique my interest."
Freddie's previous uncertainty evaporated, replaced by steely resolve.
He gritted his teeth and lifted his chin defiantly. "So, I have a secret weapon. What of it? You're bound to lose this bet. You'd better clean yourself up and brace for impact because I'm going to make sure you experience just how formidable I can be in bed!"
Helen's eyes sparkled with a cold, dismissive amusement.
The insecure always raised their voices and puffed out their chests, trying to bolster their wavering confidence by putting on a show.
Helen shrugged nonchalantly. "I'll be looking forward to it." She tossed her shoulders and made her way out of the venue.
Back at the hotel, she collapsed into bed for a much-needed nap. When she finally awoke, the sky outside had darkened into a rich, velvety night.
Hungry and restless, Helen splashed some cold water on her face, slipped on a jacket, and ventured out to find something to eat.
The restaurants near her hotel were overpriced and underwhelming, so she decided to walk a bit farther to Dardford's renowned food street.
As she strolled down the street, Helen's senses tingled with unease. Something didn't feel right.
Stopping by a parked car, she pretended to check her makeup in the mirror while subtly using the rearview mirror to keep an eye on her surroundings.
Her instincts were spot-on. A group of men emerged from a car on her right, their faces set in grim, threatening expressions. Armed with various weapons, including wooden sticks, they were clearly not out for a friendly chat.
As he struggled to turn and curse out his subordinate, he was startled to see a sharply dressed figure standing behind them.
"Who are you? Stay out of this!" Greg demanded.
Otto adjusted his suit and waved his hand dismissively. "I'm not here to waste time. You might as well come at me at once," he said.
Enraged by Otto's casual dismissal, the men grabbed their fallen sticks and charged at him.
Otto responded with effortless skill. He lifted a foot, sending one man sprawling, then executed a spinning kick that took down two more. His fists and feet moved with deadly precision, dismantling his attackers with chilling ease.
Helen, confused by the sudden commotion and the absence of the group, dropped down from the roof and started heading back.
As she neared the alley, Otto launched a decisive kick at one of the two remaining men. The other man swung his stick at Otto, but instead of dodging, Otto took the blow head-on, spinning from the impact and falling backward.
Helen arrived just in time to catch him falling.
"Ms. Spencer," Otto said with a sly smile, "I guess you're starting to believe in our little destiny, aren't you?"
