Chapter 160: Getting Master a new boyfriend

"The Die clan was trafficking women. Someone intercepted their shipment, and there was a bloodbath," the Chief said.

Peng Xiu took a long drag of her cigarette, her mind racing. "No, I didn’t know. I can make it up to you," she replied, trying to speak in code.

"Find out if Han Xin knew about it. Maybe we can finally nail this bastard," the Chief instructed.

"Okay, I will come visit soon and bring you some cake, goodnight," she said before hanging up the call. She finished her cigarette, her thoughts troubled. When she first joined the Triads five years ago, she might have believed Han Xin was involved in such crimes.

But after getting closer to him over the years, she realized he wasn’t like that. Han Xin was a good person, and she was certain he had nothing to do with this. Returning inside, she noticed he hadn’t come back. Concerned, she went looking for him, her mind a whirl of conflicting emotions.

Xiang Yu took them to the car he had parked discreetly atop the small hill. Lian and Mei, their eyes wide with wonder, gazed at the car as if it were a magical golden chariot. It was their first time seeing one, and though their excitement was palpable, their frail bodies betrayed them.

"Get in the back," Xiang Yu instructed gently, opening the door for them. He clipped their seat belts carefully making sure they were secure. "I will take you to the doctor first, and then we can get you something to eat, okay?"

The girls nodded, their heads bobbing like delicate flowers in the breeze. They leaned back into the seats, the soft leather cradling them in a cocoon of safety and comfort. Xiang Yu closed the door quietly, his eyes scanning the horizon. The distant wail of sirens reached his ears. It was probably the police driving up to the port. He knew he had to get out of here quickly.

He placed the duffle bag in the trunk, its weight a silent testament to his crimes. With a final glance at the hilltop, he slid into the driver’s seat and started the car, the headlights cutting through the darkness as they sped away.

In a dimly lit office, the Die clan patriarch’s rage was palpable. The room bore the brunt of his fury, with shattered glass and overturned furniture scattered like the remnants of a storm. His face was a mask of barely contained wrath, veins throbbing at his temples.

"Who betrayed me?" he roared, his voice echoing off the walls. "Who had the guts to attack me on my turf?"

He knew the police might link the chaos to his operations but that wasn’t his biggest concern. Trafficking was a breach of the code that governed their world. This meant that the Dragon Head’s enforcer would surely come knocking at his door, demanding answers. But before that, he needed to find the traitor; otherwise, it would be incredibly hard to do that while his every move was being watched.

"Die Wenjie!" he bellowed. The door creaked open, revealing a trembling figure. "Get me the surveillance footage. Now!"

"Yes, Father," Die Wenjie stammered, retreating hastily. The door had barely closed when a vase shattered against it, the patriarch’s fury unquenched.

In an underground clinic, Xiang Yu watched as the old doctor, known as Old Song, adjusted the IV drips attached to Lian and Mei. The sterile smell of antiseptic filled the air, mingling with the faint scent of medicinal herbs. Old Song was friends with Xiang Yu’s late father so he held some affection for him.

His white coat pockets bulging with instruments, he turned to Xiang Yu and gestured for him to follow him outside. As soon as he closed the door the old man’s brows furrowed. "Yu-er, what is up with those girls?"

"I rescued them," Xiang Yu replied, his voice steady. "I couldn’t leave them there."

"Rescued them from who?" asked Old Song his eyes narrowed. "Did you provoke someone?... When your father died, I was glad you stayed away from his business. But now... are you involving yourself again?"

"Go by Granny Wan’s stall," Old Song suggested. "She has the best congee." ƒreewebηoveℓ.com
