Xiang Yu stepped out of the elevator into the apartment was rubbing his aching lower back. He had taken a little detour to the local store, picking up a few treats for Lian and Mei. The twins had already returned from school and he had missed pick up time despite promising them that he would pick them up. This was why he bought them little trickets they would like to make up for it.
As the elevator doors opened he was met with the sight of Lian and Mei sprawled comfortably on the couch, their eyes glued to the television looking all comfortable. They seemed to he watching cartoons. The programme was unfamiliar to him but whatever it was it had them so hooked they didn’t even notice his arrival.
"I am back," he announced as he changed his shoes. He walked over and placed the shopping bags on the coffee table with a gentle thud. The twins’ heads snapped towards him, eyes lighting up at the sight of the bags.
"Master, where have you been?" Lian asked, her voice a mix of curiosity and relief.
Mei chimed in, "Did you go see Han Xin today? Is that why you didn’t pick us up from school?"
Xiang Yu stretched his back, feeling the ache intensifying. "Yep," he replied, his voice carrying a hint of weariness. The stretch did little to alleviate the tension in his muscles, a reminder of Han Xin roughly manhandling him.
Lian’s eyes narrowed as she nudged Mei, a silent communication passing between them. "What happened to your back?" Lian asked, her tone laced with suspicion.
Xiang Yu, oblivious to the twins’ dirty thoughts, shrugged nonchalantly. "Han Xin happened, that’s what. He just had to be so rough."
The twins exchanged a glance, their earlier excitement over the shopping bags momentarily forgotten. There was something unspoken in their gaze that Xiang Yu didn’t notice.
Xiang Yu groaned as he walked away, each step a reminder of his mortal limitations. He missed his immortal body from the real world, where a tussle with Han Xin wouldn’t leave him feeling like his back was broken. "I am going upstairs to sleep. Wake me up at dinner," he said, stretching his aching back before heading towards the stairs.
Lian and Mei turned to watch him ascend, their eyes filled with curiosity. Mei leaned over and whispered something to Lian, who nodded in agreement. They settled back on the couch not sure whether to congratulate their master for ahem... or tell him to stay away from Han Xin otherwise he would only get hurt in the end.
Lian pulled out her phone and opened an app, quickly placing an order. When the notification came that the order had arrived, she called Little Bai in the office downstairs. The phone rang twice before he picked up.
"What did you buy? You shouldn’t order takeout; it will ruin your dinner," Little Bai scolded, his voice carrying a familiar tone of concern.
Lian rolled her eyes. "Brother Bai, you know you nag like a mum."
"If it’s food, I am going to give it to someone else," Little Bai threatened.
Mei leaned closer to the phone. "It’s not food; it’s medicine for Master."
There was a pause on the other end. "Is he hurt?" Little Bai asked, his voice now tinged with worry.
Lian and Mei exchanged a glance. "You are too young to know," Lian said, a teasing lilt in her voice.
Little Bai was speechless. "I am obviously older than you," he protested.
Mei giggled. "Master’s back hurts, so we bought him medicine."
