On the way back to the Nicholls residence, Gabrielle pretended to get a phone call and found an excuse.
"Nate, can you pull over? My friend is picking me up for dinner. You and Mae go ahead."
"Alright," Nathaniel replied.
With Gabrielle gone, the car was left with just Mavis and Nathaniel, making the atmosphere a bit awkward.
During the snowball fight, Nathaniel had protected her a few times, which left Mavis with mixed feelings.
None of them spoke during the car ride, and the tension was unbearable.
Nathaniel finally decided to break the silence by pressing the music button.
As a few songs played, Mavis's eyes showed a hint of surprise.
These were all from her playlist.
When did Nathaniel start liking the same music as her?
Though she had many questions, the current atmosphere kept her from speaking up.
If he was not going to talk, neither would she.
Unsurprisingly, they remained silent all the way back to the Nicholls residence.
Entering the living room, they found Marius sitting on the sofa, sipping tea.
"Nate, Grandma's coming back soon. You know that, right?"
"Yeah," Nathaniel responded casually, sitting across from Marius and joining him for a cup of tea.
"When she arrives, you and Mae should pick her up. You know how Grandma is. If Gabrielle goes, they might end up arguing."
Mildred was stubborn yet playful, and she always ended up bickering with Gabrielle whenever she visited.
Gabrielle never won these squabbles, as Mildred was the cherished matriarch of the Nicholls family, and at her age, they could only indulge her.
"She already knows about your marriage from her call with Gabrielle. She'll probably contact you tonight. I have some work to take care of at the office, so I'll be heading out," Marius said before leaving.
There was a hint of helplessness and a plea in his voice.
Mavis simply replied, "Okay," and went upstairs.
…
The next morning, Mavis baked some cookies and small cakes to bring to the kids.
When Nathaniel came downstairs, he saw her busy in the kitchen, wearing an apron.
She looked every bit the picture of a devoted wife.
For some reason, Nathaniel felt a subtle sense of peace.
It was as if her presence alone calmed his heart.
He quietly walked over to her and started helping with the baking.
Mavis was taken aback but quickly shifted her focus back to decorating the treats.
