In the past, Declan was always harsh with Kristen, yelling and hitting her.
No one realized that Kristen held an irreplaceable place in his heart.
The doctor hesitated and asked repeatedly, "This will be very painful. Are you sure?"
Declan nodded.
With no other choice, the doctor proceeded as Declan instructed.
Removing the wooden splinter differed from removing metal or glass, which could be done easily.
Wood would splinter into many tiny fragments, requiring the wound to be cut open to clean out every piece.
Although the splinter had not hit the bone, it was close enough.
The doctor could tell the pain would be piercing and unbearable.
Throughout the process, Declan's men could hardly bear to watch, but Declan remained silent, staring at his arm as if it did not belong to him.
Sweat began to bead on his forehead, and soon, large droplets fell.
His men turned away, unable to watch any longer.
After half an hour, the splinters were finally removed.
The doctor applied medication and warned Declan to avoid heavy work to prevent lasting damage.
The doctor, too, was drenched in sweat, fearing he might hurt Declan too much or fail to clean the wound properly.
When it was over, Declan's men brought him water.
He sipped it, his eyes fixed on the door.
One of his men asked, "Mr. Blackwell, what are you looking at?"
A woman standing nearby chimed in, "That's right. Kristen always caused trouble for Mr. Blackwell. Even in death, she's ruining everything for us."
Someone overheard and could not help but mock her, "You're just mad because you couldn't win Mr. Blackwell's favor. You've been jealous of Kristen for ages, and everyone knows it."
Embarrassed, the woman snapped back, "What did you say? Of all people, you're the last one who should talk. How many times have you come to me? Why didn't you say anything when you were in my bed? Where's your loyalty now?"
"That's a lie! I never slept with you!"
"Now you deny it?"
Seeing the argument escalate, another man interrupted impatiently, "Enough! We're here to discuss our next move, not to listen to your bickering. Let's focus. Where do we go from here?"
Having served Declan for a long time, they were well aware of his ruthless treatment of traitors.
If they wanted to leave, they needed a solid plan, or they might not survive the attempt.
Someone suggested, "What if we go to Nathaniel?"
