Mavis' heart broke hearing Callum's words, and just as she was about to respond, her phone buzzed again.
It was a message from Sheena.
[Nathaniel is at the hospital. He's already in the parking garage. Mae, get out now.]
Mavis instantly panicked, and she gently released Callum.
"Mr. Callum, I have to go now."
Callum's eyes welled up again, murmuring sadly, "Mommy, do you not want me either?"
Mavis' heart ached as she stroked his tear-streaked face, trying to soothe him.
"I'll be back tomorrow, I promise. I'll tell you stories and play with you, okay?"
"You have to keep your promise!"
Mavis nodded. "We can pinky swear. If I lie, I'm a little piggy."
Only then did Callum reluctantly let her go, lying back down on the bed.
Mavis quickly gathered her medical supplies and exited the room.
Just as she stepped into the hallway, she heard the elevator chime.
Nathaniel stepped out with an indifferent expression, dressed in a perfectly tailored dark blue suit.
Despite the five years that had passed, he remained as strikingly handsome as ever, making it hard for anyone to look away.
However, Mavis had no desire to look at him.
She quickly lowered her head and turned in the opposite direction, trying to avoid him.
Although they were only about ten meters apart, it seemed as if they were separated by a wall, as if they were strangers.
Not many people were in the hospital's inpatient wing. There were only a few nurses and doctors moving through the hallway.
Nathaniel noticed that the nurse had just come out of Callum's room and thought something had happened to his son.
He called out, "Nurse, wait a moment."
The hallway was nearly empty, but Mavis did not stop, speeding up as if she had not heard him.
Nathaniel watched her slender figure retreat, and a strange sense of familiarity crept over him.
"What are you doing here?"
"What brings you here?"
Sheena smiled, breaking the brief tension first.
"I went upstairs to check on Asher. Since it's just one floor, I figured taking the stairs would be faster than waiting for the elevator. But what about you?"
Nathaniel's frown eased slightly as he replied casually, "Like you, I thought the elevator was too slow. I was heading up to check on Asher."
"You might want to wait a bit," Sheena said with a small smile as she closed the stairwell door behind her. "He just fell asleep. He'll probably give you his usual snark if you wake him."
Nathaniel watched her close the door, and his face turned grim.
Just before the door clicked shut, he reached out and stopped it.
"Just now, I saw a suspicious nurse leaving Callum's room. I called out to her, but she panicked and ran. I'm worried she might be one of the kidnappers coming back for revenge."
Sheena feigned surprise. "That's outrageous. They're actually bold enough to come to a hospital even with all the security? Did you catch her?"
"No," Nathaniel replied, "I suspect she might be hiding behind this door right now. What do you think?"
