Nathaniel's words angered Mavis, and it definitely hurt too.

Her hand, still covered in dish soap suds, slapped away Nathaniel's hands from her waist, leaving a red mark on the back of his hand.

"I didn't lie to Callum. Evan and I are just colleagues and friends. Believe it or not, I don't care."

Nathaniel took a step back, leaning against the counter as he wiped the foam off his hand with a paper towel.

"I looked into it. Ever since you started that company in Vraeyce, Evan has been by your side for five years. Are you sure nothing happened between you two?"

He scoffed, adding, "Men and women can't just be friends. Even if you're not interested in him, he might not be as innocent as you think. Do you really expect me to believe your 'just friends' story?"

"Oh, right, men and women can't just be friends. So, what about you and Kristen? You and Tiffany? And what about Sheena? All of those females that you 'treat like a sister'? So, if I happen to have a male friend, isn't that just fair?"

Nathaniel's expression darkened, and he stayed silent.

"In wealthy families, it's common for couples to do their own thing. I don't care who you're with, so what right do you have to question my life?"

After washing the last dish, she dried her hands and turned to leave.

Nathaniel grabbed her wrist. "Where are you going?"

"To take Callum to kindergarten."

Nathaniel's face remained cold as he let her go.

"No need. Until you clear up whatever mess you have with Evan, you're not seeing Callum."

"Nathaniel, you're being unreasonable!"

His face remained stern as he turned and left the apartment.

Mavis hurried after him, but as she reached the bottom of the apartment building, she heard the roar of the engine as the luxury car sped away, leaving her with no chance to catch up.

She watched the car's taillights fade into the distance, fury boiling within her.

Nathaniel was just like a tyrant, impossible to reason with and ridiculously controlling.

His mood swings were unpredictable, and he was just insane!

She could not believe she had momentarily considered him a perfect husband.

Memories of the past flooded back—pregnant and vulnerable, being choked, imprisoned, controlled, and insulted by him.

She was gorgeous, exuding confidence and sophistication as she sat there in her high heels, wide-leg pants, and military green fitted top.

"Juice, tea, or coffee?" Tiffany offered.

"Just a glass of water."

Tiffany smiled and called the waiter over, ordering two glasses of water.

"Isn't there something you'd like to ask me?"

Mavis responded indifferently, "You'll just tell me anyway."

Tiffany laughed, seemingly amused by Mavis's directness.

"I do appreciate straightforward people. If we weren't rivals, we might have been friends."

"I don't have time for friends. Just get to the point."

Tiffany dropped the pretense. "Ms. Olsen, I don't know what happened between you and Nate, but since you've already chosen to walk away from being part of the Nicholls family, you shouldn't have come back."
