This weekend was nothing short of a nightmare for Callum.

Nathaniel had arranged piano lesson in the morning, and math lesson in the afternoon for Callum.

With both tutors keeping a close eye on him, it was impossible for him to take a nap.

Callum's hands hovered over the piano keys, but his mind was elsewhere, causing him to hit the wrong notes repeatedly.

Theo Orchardson, his piano tutor, sighed and shook his head.

"Luckily, Mr. Nicholls isn't home today. If he saw how distracted you were, I doubt he'd be too happy."

Theo sat beside Callum and patiently asked, "What's bothering you? Why don't you tell me about it? And if it's a secret, I promise I won't tell anyone."

Callum mumbled sadly, "I miss my mommy."

He had spent another night alone, and he did not have a great rest.

Back home, Nathaniel always told him he was a big boy and that he had to get used to sleeping by himself.

He was not allowed to cuddle with Mildred, either. Besides, Mildred snored, and he would not be able to sleep.

When he stayed overnight at Mavis's apartment, Nathaniel and Mavis would sleep beside him, one on each side.

They even had breakfast together.

It had been so cozy, so perfect.

Callum loved it.

Sadly, that magical moment was too short lived, and he only got to experience it once,

Theo was unaware of Callum's exact thoughts, but he knew Mavis had passed away long ago.

Thinking that Callum was just craving affection, Theo comforted him, saying, "Since you're missing your mom, how about learning a new song, one just for her?"

Callum instantly perked up. "Sure! What song is it?"

"It's called 'Mother'. It's not in the standard piano syllabus, but its melody is gentle, just like our mothers. Are you sure you want to learn it?"

'Daddy is surely going to be mad at me... I don't want to get in trouble! Someone, save me!' Callum thought, panicking.

Callum worked at his desk until the sky outside darkened, but Nathaniel was still not home.

Even though it was unusual, it gave him more time to finish his work.

After quite some time, Callum was finally done with his math homework, his wrist hurting.

Even though he was unsure how well he did, he was glad it was over and that he was safe from any punishment.

Hopefully…

Callum's stomach growled loudly, and he quickly hopped off his chair and went to the dining room.

Mildred was already there, directing the servants as they set the table while the chef was busy preparing dinner.

The little boy climbed onto a dining chair, sneaked a few cherries from the fruit bowl, and ran out to the garden to enjoy his snack.
