Nathaniel gave her a piercing look and asked, "How exactly do you plan to guarantee that?"
"I'll double the compensation. If anything happens to the Nicholls Group because of Evan and me, I'll take full responsibility. I'll pay for all damages and clear everything up with the media. It's my mess, so I'll fix it."
Nathaniel laughed as if she had told a joke.
"With that little company you started in Vraeyce? Could you afford to cover the Nicholls Group's losses? Double the amount, no less?"
She could not.
The Nicholls Group was far too valuable, and any hit to its market would cost her an unimaginable sum.
She lowered her gaze and admitted, "That's exactly why I can't afford to mess up. If anything goes wrong, I'll be ruined, so I'll make sure to avoid any trouble. I won't let the Internet have a reason to comment on my private life."
Nathaniel seemed satisfied with her answer, his expression softening a bit.
"Alright. I'll give Evan back to you in three days."
"Why three days?"
Nathaniel replied, "Because you didn't fully agree to my term earlier."
Mavis could barely contain her frustration.
His "term" had been that she was not allowed to bring up divorce again.
It was an impossible condition, given her need to escape this marriage.
He clearly expected her to drop the matter forever, but she could no longer live under the weight of this relationship.
"Fine. Three days then."
Mavis clenched her firsts tightly as she glared at Nathaniel, resentment burning in her eyes.
Yet to him, her angry expression only made her look more adorable in her stubbornness.
With her pale skin and pretty face, she looked more like a feisty kitten than a threat.
Nathaniel chuckled and walked away.
Troy was ready to follow Nathaniel but was stopped by Mavis.
Before she could even speak, Troy frowned as if he already knew what she was about to ask.
"Mrs. Nicholls, please go easy on me. I know where Mr. Mueller is being kept, but I can't tell you. Mr. Nicholls would never forgive me."
Mavis fell silent.
"Just wait three days. I promise we'll take good care of Mr. Mueller. He'll be returned to you in perfect condition—safe, well-fed, and unharmed."
Mavis had no choice but to step aside, letting Troy and the other bodyguards pass.
Three days was not long.
A bodyguard swiftly removed the gag from Evan's mouth and placed his glasses on his face. Then, he left the room and shut the door behind him, leaving Evan and Nathaniel alone.
Evan wasted no time, shouting, "Where's Mae? You sick, twisted psychopath. What have you done to her?"
Nathaniel remained indifferent as he replied, "She's my wife. I wouldn't do anything to her."
"But she doesn't want to be your wife anymore! You don't even love her. Why can't you just let her go and give her the freedom she deserves?"
Nathaniel's gaze grew colder. "What happens between me and her is none of your business."
"But I know what you've done."
Nathaniel's hand froze mid-motion as he toyed with his watch.
His icy blue eyes darkened, flashing with murderous intent.
"And what exactly do you think you know?"
Despite the tension in the air, Evan did not back down.
"I know you ditched her to run off to another country to see another woman. I know she was framed for leaking company secrets, and instead of standing by her, you kicked her out of the company. Even after she showed you the evidence that proved her innocence, you didn't bother to clear her name. She was pregnant, and you locked her away. When she went into labor in the middle of the night, you abandoned her and left her to suffer while you were off having fun with someone else."
Evan's voice grew louder and angrier, and he was practically shouting.
"Nathaniel, how can you live with yourself? Can you even bear to look at yourself in the mirror?"
