The scene before Nathaniel did not resemble a kidnapping but looked more like a planned confrontation.
Nathaniel chuckled softly. "So, there was no kidnapping, was there?"
Had the three of them conspired to trick him?
He shot a cold glance at Troy, who quickly shook his head.
"Mr. Nicholls, I'm not in on this. I'm as surprised as you are."
They had assumed Declan was behind this and focused their investigation in that direction. The tip about Mavis being held at the Lumina Hotel had come from an anonymous source.
Dylan spoke up, "We had to do this to force you to walk."
Evan added, "You even came to 'rescue' Mae in a wheelchair. You're so committed to your lies that you're willing to go this far. There's not an ounce of sincerity in you."
Mavis remained silent as she took out her phone and played a video for Nathaniel. It showed him getting up from his wheelchair outside the apartment and getting into the car on his own.
"You faked your injury for over two weeks, treating me like a servant. Don't you have anything to say?" Mavis asked.
Nathaniel stared at the video and said nothing.
In contrast, Troy was getting anxious from Nathaniel's lack of response.
He tried to explain, "Mrs. Nicholls, you misunderstood it all. Mr. Nicholls was so worried about your safety that he forgot about his pain. He just wanted to make sure you were safe."
Mavis laughed sarcastically, "It seems I'm the miracle cure then."
"You certainly are Mr. Nicholls's medicine. Mr. Nicholls is…" Troy's words trailed off.
The looping video showed Nathaniel walking steadily on his bandaged leg. Even a medical miracle could not explain such normal movement for a supposedly fractured leg.
Troy was at a loss for words and leaned in to whisper to Nathaniel, "Mr. Nicholls, I can't cover for this. You've been exposed. What should we do?"
Nathaniel frowned and grumbled, "I can see the situation clearly. I don't need your reminder."
"Yes, Mr. Nicholls. See you in court in three days," Mavis replied, freeing her hand and walking away decisively.
Dylan made a face at Nathaniel before hurrying after Mavis.
Nathaniel tossed the documents to the floor in disgust, his face etched with frustration.
Troy understood Nathaniel's mood and tried to advise him, "Mr. Nicholls, I understand Mrs. Nicholls's position. Maybe you should try to understand her too. You don't want a divorce, but your pride won't let you say it. Your methods of trying to keep her are too extreme. In her eyes, it only makes you seem terrible. If you truly don't want to end this marriage, you should try a different approach, something direct and sincere."
Nathaniel scoffed. "What? Should I get on my knees and beg?"
Troy fell silent.
Nathaniel's face darkened, his tone bitter. "Forget it. I've tried. If she's determined to leave, I'll let her go."
Troy mumbled, "That's what you said the last two times too."
