Nathaniel tried to deflect, standing straight and unyielding.
When Mildred heard about his injury and hospitalization, the anger in her eyes turned to concern. However, remembering the mess he made, her face quickly hardened.
"Playing dumb with me? Very well, kneel in the altar room. Come find me when you've figured out what you've done wrong."
Mildred let out a cold snort, thumped her cane in frustration, and turned to leave, leaving Nathaniel and a panicked Troy standing there.
"Sir, it's been years since you've had to kneel there since becoming the head of the family. You must have really crossed a line with Madam Nicholls this time. You should give in early to avoid making things worse," Troy urged, worried.
Mildred was stubborn and would not back down on matters of principle.
If Nathaniel did not yield, this situation could get ugly.
Troy was freaking out, wondering who could save Nathaniel.
…
After about half an hour, Mildred leisurely made her way to the altar room.
In the center of the candlelit room, Nathaniel knelt with a straight back, forgoing any cushion, his posture impeccable.
"Still as stubborn as when you were little," Mildred commented, feeling a pang of sympathy.
She remembered how often he was in this room as a child under Vanda's harsh discipline, either being spanked or forced to kneel.
He really had it rough.
Nonetheless, Mildred steeled herself as she remembered his bold actions and let out an intentional snort tinged with exasperation.
Nathaniel kept his eyes lowered, still feigning ignorance. "If you have something to say, Grandma, please just say it. I don't know what I've done to upset you."
"You went behind my back and signed something to please Mae, giving away Callum's custody. Do I really need to spell out such an outrageous act for you?" Mildred scolded.
Nathaniel remained silent, head bowed.
"I told you very clearly last time not to use Callum's custody as a pawn in your marital struggles. You completely disregarded my words!"
Mildred thumped her cane angrily and added, "Do you really think I'm too old to notice when you pull something this big? Rest assured, my ears and eyes work just fine. I can keep up with you for another decade!"
Nathaniel remained silent, head bowed, accepting Mildred's criticism.
Seeing his determination, Mildred took a harder stance and shouted, "Bring back that divorce agreement immediately, or you'll face family discipline!"
"Do as you see fit, Grandma," Nathaniel replied, unyielding.
"You stubborn boy!" Mildred matched his resolve and ordered, "Go! Bring me the family discipline tools. Don't think that just because you're the head of the family now, no one in the Nicholls family can keep you in line. I'm going to teach you a lesson today!"
Soon, a servant brought in a bucket of paddles soaking in saltwater.
Nathaniel glanced at them briefly.
It was clear they had been prepared in advance.
Troy was horrified, knowing without a doubt that the punishment would be unbearable.
Unable to stand by, he rushed over and grabbed the silver bucket.
"Madam Nicholls, you can't do this! You weren't in the country last time, so you don't know how badly Mr. Nathaniel suffered when he faced family discipline. That was when Mr. Romello was in charge, and Mr. Nathaniel had a fever for three whole days afterward. Besides, he's already injured and has to be hospitalized."
