Missing?
Mavis felt her vision go dark, stumbling back a step. "How could this happen?"
Nathaniel quickly put on his coat, steadying Mavis with an arm around her waist as he calmly asked Troy, "When did this happen?"
"About three hours ago," Troy replied.
Nathaniel frowned, anger simmering beneath his composed exterior. "How could it take hours for them to realize he was gone? What kind of security do we have?"
Troy explained with a pained expression, "Mr. Callum was playing hide-and-seek with the bodyguards at the hospital. He's so clever, always finding the best hiding spots. At first, they didn't worry, thinking he was just being playful as usual. But after three hours of searching without a trace, they feared something might have happened and came to report."
"Are you sure they searched thoroughly? Have they checked all the surveillance?" Nathaniel pressed.
"The bodyguards have combed the entire hospital and surrounding area without any leads. They're reviewing the surveillance footage now, but it'll take time."
Mavis' hands shook with nervousness, her eyes teary. "He's such a small child. Where could he have gone? Could one of the Nicholls family's enemies have targeted Callum?"
Before finding Callum, these were all just speculations, and no one could be certain.
Nathaniel tried to comfort her, "It might not be that serious. The little rascal has always been naughty. Remember when he faked a stomachache during his tutoring session and ended up falling asleep in the bathroom? Everyone searched for hours then too."
Mavis remained uneasy and countered, "But remember, he and Asher were kidnapped before. The kidnappers even threw him from a rooftop. He was hospitalized for trauma after that. What if this time…"
"Of course. With me here, no one in this city would dare harm him," Nathaniel assured her.
His words did not ease Mavis' worry much.
"You had several bodyguards protecting Callum at kindergarten, yet I still managed to see him. You say no one would dare hurt him, but he was thrown from a rooftop by kidnappers."
Nathaniel was momentarily at a loss for words.
Sensing Mavis' lingering resentment over Callum's past injury, Nathaniel calmly explained, "The kidnapping was indeed my oversight. But Declan is a wanted fugitive now. The Nicholls family has been working with the bureau to crack down on his operations, destroying several of his hideouts. He's a highly-targeted criminal, and he has no means to snatch Callum from under the noses of hospital security and Nicholls family bodyguards."
Despite his reassurances, Mavis could not shake the feeling of dread that hung over her heart.
