Carole jumped in, screeching, “Exactly! Alivia, what are you waiting for? Have you forgotten who you owe loyalty to? Grover Yates is your husband & frust

“And don’t forget,” she sneered, “the Yates family has no heir. General Algernon will soon adopt our precious Lavern as his successor. That makes me the future matriarch! You dare ignore orders from your own mistress?”

Alivia felt a buzzing in her ears, her mind clouded with irritation.

She turned to Jessica, her face cool and distant. “Grover Yates simply wishes to see his brother. That’s not such a terrible thing. Please, step aside.”

She and her late husband had held the Caesar family in high esteem; she had grown fond of Garbisch and Jessica from a young age. She had no desire for conflict with them.

But today’s situation left her no choice.

Meanwhile, Carole continued to shout from the sidelines. “Alivia, what are you standing there for? Ignoring Grover Yates now? He let you stay under his roof all these years out of respect for Rashad’s memory. You think you’re irreplaceable? Disobey him, and you’ll be thrown out like a stray dog!”

Lavern snorted coldly from the side, clearly agreeing with his wife.

Carole pressed harder, her voice dripping with malice. “And when you’re cast out, don’t even dream of being buried next to Rashad! You’ll rot alone, forgotten!”

Alivia’s face blanched.

There were many things she could endure. But Rashad–her husband–she would never betray his memory, never risk being separated from him even in death.

Alivia turned back to Jessica, her voice low, nearly pleading. “Grover Yates is my elder. If I disobey… I would be unfilial. Please, Jessica–”

Before she could finish, Jessica calmly pulled something from her sleeve and held it high.

“The command token,” Jessica said sharply. “Alivia, you will obey.”

Alivia’s eyes widened. She recognized it immediately. With a sharp metallic clang, she dropped her spear to the ground and knelt on one knee. “A orders,” she said.

Jessica’s voice was cool, commanding. “Aliyia, by my order, you are to return to your residence immediately and remain in solitary reflection for one day. No mistakes permitted.”
