Chapter 169
It had been three days since Jessica and her brother had rescued Waldo.
Early that morning, Garbisch went to the palace to see the King. For rescuing Waldo and helping to quell the rebellion, the King handsomely reviar dere him with all sorts of gifts.
However, that evening, the King unexpectedly summoned Jessica to the royal palace.
“General Garbisch tells me that rounding up th
up the rebels this time was all your credit. Is that true?” the King asked.
Jessica lowered her eyes and said softly, “Your Majesty, the credit goes to my brother and Markus. I only did my small part and dared not claim any credit.”
The King chuckled softly as he looked at the young girl in the imperial:
study.
She had blossomed into a graceful seventeen–year–old.
As the King gazed at Jessica, his eyes seemed slightly misty, as if he was looking at another person through her.
“Andrew, doesn’t she look like her?” the King asked.
Jessica remained silent, standing composed as she endured the appraising gazes of the two men.
Andrew knew who the King was referring to. It was Celine, the once most beautiful woman in Southernville.
Andrew nodded and said, “The resemblance is uncanny. The more I look, the more alike they appear. Their resemblance goes beyond mere features. Their very presence and poise mirror one another. She only lacks some of General Celine’s martial bearing.”
Back then, Celine was a peerless martial artist.
‘Jessica, however, knew nothing about martial arts. What a pity,‘ Andrew and the King sighed inwardly.
Jessica could guess what they were reminiscing about, yet she kept her lips sealed, as serene and ethereal as a celestial fairy untouched by mortal
affairs.
Gazing at her once more, the King grew ever fonder of the radiant young girl standing before him.
He chuckled again and said, “Markus has told me everything. You scouted ahead and analyzed the enemy situation with perfect clarity and precision.
“As for Waldo, I’ve already asked him as well. When his troops got trapped in the maze of boulders, you, with your keen insight, unraveled the formation’s secrets, safely guiding everyone out, and even rescuing those stranded in another part of the Stone Forest.”
Indeed, if it hadn’t been for Jessica this time, not only would Waldo have perished, but even more than six thousand soldiers would have starved to
death in that maze of boulders.
“You have great merits, yet you refuse to take any credit. Do
you take
me for a fool, or are you trying to deceive me?” the King asked.
“I wouldn’t dare!” Jessica quickly shook her head, startled, and hurried to explain, “I’m only a frail woman. Any merit I may have had was merely by chance. Compared to my brother and Markus, I’m far inferior.”
“That brat Markus usually has quite the arrogant streak, yet he is full of praise for
you, proof enough of your extraordinary talents,” said t
Seeing she was about to explain further, the King waved his hand dismissively.
Seeing it, Jessica fell silent, not daring to say another word.
Then, the King continued, “You possess extraordinary talent, yet always keep your brilliance sheathed, never showing off. But when the time comes, you
