Chapter 97
Malik’s sudden proposal to marry Jessica baffled everyone around him. Not even his closest companions understood the reason behind it.
“Malik, did you know Jessica before?” Elsie asked, full of curiosity.
Malik shook his head.
Elsie got anxious. “Then why did you propose to her? She looked absolutely terrified by your request!”
“She’s extraordinarily beautiful. You’ve spent so many years in Askar. When have you seen anyone more stunning than her?” Malik replied with a calm smile, “A gentle, graceful woman is what every gentleman desires. What’s so strange about me wanting to marry her?”
Elsie didn’t buy it. “You’re not the type to fall for a pretty face. If you liked beauties, you wouldn’t have rejected all the ladies that others tried to match you with. They were all gorgeous in different ways, but you didn’t spare any of them a second glance.”
It just didn’t add up to her. Something about this felt off.
Elsie added, “Don’t tell me you’re just mad that she beat you, and now you want revenge?”
The more she thought about it, the more she felt that might be the case. “Malik, Jessica’s a good girl. You can’t bully her. And besides, she didn’t cheat. She just used some clever techniques. I mean, she didn’t use any dirty moves. You lost fair and square!”
“You’re very familiar with her, are you?” Malik raised an eyebrow. “If I recall, you two just met. How can you be so sure she’s a good person? You trust people so easily. Aren’t you afraid of being used?”
“Why would Jessica lie to me? She doesn’t even want to be friends with me. I’m the one bothering her!” Elsie pouted, looking a bit deflated.
“She doesn’t want to be your friend?” Malik was intrigued now. That was unexpected to him.
Given Jessica’s status, getting close to the royals of Askar should’ve only been beneficial. Yet even Elsie could tell she was avoiding closeness.
Malik found Jessica interesting. He became more curious about her.
Elsie sighed. “She’s just humoring me, probably because she’s afraid I’ll trouble her brother. But I know she doesn’t want to deal with me.”
She continued, “Still, I don’t know why, but the way she brushes me off. It makes me feel like she’s sincere. She’s nothing like the people around me. They’re all so fake!”
Elsie rested her chin in her hands. “I’m a princess, right? So why doesn’t she want to be friends with me? She’s such a strange person.”
Malik didn’t say much in return.
Then Elsie added, “But she is a good person. Malik, don’t hurt her. She’s in a tough spot too. Her brother… I heard he was badly injured. It’s so sad.”
Malik asked, “You know that too?”
Elsie replied, “Of course I do! It’s all over the place. People have been gossiping. I heard it as soon as I arrived.”
Everyone said that Waldo, whom Jessica had liked, had fallen for someone else. And that new woman injured Jessica’s brother badly. But Jessica kept her head down and acted like nothing was wrong, completely calm and detached.
Elsie couldn’t help feeling sorry for her. But Malik wasn’t like her. His heart wasn’t quite so soft.
Suddenly, a chill drifted in from outside, and Malik frowned slightly, stepping out of the room.
