Sierra had been in a somber mood, but Mateo’s rambling had her laughing despite herself.

Seeing her smile, Mateo added, “Sierra, you’re gonna run into more guys like that in the future. The second and third generations? They play way dirtier.”

He didn’t know how else to put it. Sierra was just… too clean. She couldn’t stand filth.

But some stains couldn’t be scrubbed away.

Every family had a few rotten ones.

Sierra looked at him. “You think the way I handled Trev was wrong?”

“Of course not!”

Mateo shook his head quickly. “He bullied you. You fought back. He had it coming.”

“I just meant…”

He fumbled for the right words, and Sierra finished them for him. “Don’t be so cynical? Don’t be so self–righteous?”

“Something like that.”

He’d noticed it back in Maviston–Sierra had a strong sense of justice. If she didn’t, Kason would’ve been dealt with long ago.

“I’m not trying to be righteous. I just keep thinking about myself.”

Sierra lowered her gaze. “Back when I was in prison, when people were hurting me, I kept wishing someone would help. Someone who’d speak up and expose what they were doing.”

But no one did.

Not a single person showed up–not even when she got out.

That’s why she chose to make everything public. Someone had to.

Only people who’ve lived through it can understand how even the smallest hope can save lives.

She didn’t expect everyone to get it. People who haven’t been there can’t possibly grasp what that

kind of despair feels like.
