Lucian was getting angrier by the second.

Asher stepped right in front of Evelina, blocking her from Lucian's tirade. "Lucian, that's way out of line. Eve's dad died trying to save our parents. We owe it to her to take care of her."

"Yeah, and I was nice to Evelina before, but it turns out she's just an ungrateful snake!"

Lucian really regretted letting the fox into the henhouse.

He never should have agreed to Asher's idea of bringing Evelina back to the Langston household.

Evelina, hiding behind Asher, said with a quivering voice, "Asher, I know Lucian doesn't like me. Maybe it's best if I just leave, so I don't cause any more trouble."

Just then, the police showed up, and Evelina wanted to make herself scarce.

But the cop said, "Hold on, you can't leave yet. You mentioned you were injured and needed to go to the hospital for a check-up. We still need your statement."

Evelina's face fell. "I... I've already told you everything I know, which is nothing."

"But the victim, Lemira, claims it was you who instigated Caspian, provoking him to violence."

"I didn't do any such thing. Lemira's always had it out for me, so of course she'd point the finger. But I don't blame her. Still, you can't just accuse people without proof."

Evelina turned to Asher, tears welling in her eyes. "Asher, you believe me, right?"

Asher nodded. "Of course, I believe you. But don't worry, just cooperate with the investigation. If you've done nothing wrong, then there's nothing to fear."

Evelina stiffened. She was scared they'd find something.

She was not keen on cooperating.

Lucian asked the officer, "Did Lemira mention any proof?"

"Yes, she claims there's a video recording on Evelina's phone, so we'll need to check it."

Evelina stepped back in panic. "I don't have it."

The officer said, "Please hand over your phone for inspection."
