To her, a day without seeing him felt like an eternity, but he simply didn't care enough about her to feel the absence.

"Heh." Caroline understood, letting out a dry chuckle as she tugged at the corners of her mouth. She began to wheel herself away.

Whether by accident or on purpose, her purse slipped and fell to the ground.

Caroline glanced at him. "Could you do me a favor and pick that up?"

Not an unreasonable request.

"Sure," Gilbert replied, bending down to retrieve the purse. He handed it to her. "Here you go..."

He stayed in that bent position for a moment longer.

Instead of taking the purse, Caroline raised her hand and gently placed it on his head.

She gazed at him with a soft expression. "Gilbert, are you... okay?"

Gilbert paused, a guess forming in his mind. "Did my brother tell you?"

"Yeah," Caroline nodded. "You're sick. Why didn't you tell me something so important?"

Gilbert smirked. "What good would telling you do? You're not a doctor."

Caroline's face tightened, momentarily at a loss for words.

She pressed on, "How's the treatment going? Is there any improvement?"

"It's alright."

Gilbert gave a half-hearted response. Seeing she still hadn't taken the purse, he placed it on her lap.

"Alright? What does that mean?"

Caroline's brows knitted in worry. "Can you be a bit more specific? I'm really concerned about you!"

Hearing this, Gilbert's brow twitched.

He shook his head lightly. "There's nothing to worry about."

After a pause, he added, "I already have someone to worry about me."

Caroline froze, her expression momentarily blank. "Sherilyn, right?"

She followed with a bitter smile. "You really meant it when you said things wouldn't be the same between us."

Gilbert didn't respond. "I've got things to do, excuse me."
